Event Horizon is a superb film (show's what Anderson can do and it's a shame the production was rushed) Sunshine is interesting but Danny Boyle doing what he often does, lifting various bits from other films and slapping them together (hence why a very realistic sci-fi films suddeny becomes Event Horizon in the last 15 minutes...)

Agreed on all counts. It's a pity that both films (especially Sunshine) didn't know how to resolve themselves in the final act and decided to become generic slasher flicks. I was very disappointed in regards to Sunshine because I'm a big fan of Boyle's.

I liked Event Horizon just fine...up until the final act where it all falls apart. That plus Sam Neil's cringe-worthy attempt at a scream just killed it for me. And yes, Sunshine had pretty much the same problem (sans hammy screaming.)

Oh, and it's probably a bit obvious but it only just occurred to me that the mysterious figure could be what the space jockey looks like out of it's suit. It'd certainly explain why the chair is empty and what that big human looking face is about.

Yeah, though in EV's case I suspect if they'd had the time it might have been something more. Then again you could argue that that's all Alien comes down to in the end, an unstoppable killer picking off people one by one till the plucky heroin finishes it off.

Yeah, you're right about that. I guess it's all about the atmosphere and presentation of the story. With Event Horizon (although working on ten-plus-year old memories here so correct me if I'm wrong) and Sunshine, there wasn't much if any notion of the films being anything but straight up science-fiction adventure/exploration, whereas Alien starts out the same but changes gears a hell of a lot sooner.

Just goes to show how different opinions can be. Event Horizon was gratuitous splatter/schlock with nothing to redeem it and squandered a very good cast. One of the few spaceship movies I can say truly sucked.

Agreed. The setup was perfect and compelling as hell-- a ship that went missing long ago mysteriously shows up in the orbit of Neptune, and a crew has to go and investigate.

But amazingly the director was never able to generate an ounce of atmosphere or suspense with that setting (not helped by the fact they showed the big mystery ship in the opening seconds), and the movie quickly degenerated into just a lame, FX-heavy splatter-fest.

Ugh. Just such a wasted opportunity.

Couldn't disagree more. Lost is one of my two absolute favorite shows in the history of television (NuBSG is the other) and I will gladly watch anything involving JJAbrams, Damon Lindelof and/or Carlton Cuse, pretty much without heistation. The fact that Damon Lindelof is writing it is part of the reason I'm so excited.

Yeah, that was why I hated Sunshine when I went to see it in the theater. This was before I did horror movies, and I went in expecting a quiter sci-fi movie. I still regret that we (I saw it with my mom, since I don't drive and won't see movies by myself) paid full theater ticket price to see it.

In a way Sunshine is even more criminal than Event Horizon since at least with EH we weren't sucked in by a very good first half before it became total shit.

Exactly. It starts out with the promise of a great hard-scifi movie and then suddenly deteriorates into a third-rate carbon copy of a completely different science fiction movie (and with a worse resolve than the movie they lifted their second half from).

At least Event Horizon didn't even try to camouflage that it's just some mystery horror at its core (although with some stunning visuals).

I'm still a HUGE fan of "Sunshine", even though I understand why some people object to it. I think a lot of the resolution was telegraphed from the opening scene. (except the slasher elements) I don't mind films that surprise in the third act.

But we are probably going a bit off topic.
