Re: Superman (casting, rumors, pix till release)

The official plot of the film has not been released yet (which is the same deal with "The Dark Knight Rises" and most likely won't for a while, all we have currently are internet rumours and reported casting call sheet synopsis (that wasn't actually confirmed IIRC).

You know, that's possible - but computers and computer games were so just so trendy (and newly merchandisable) in the early 1980s that it's just as possible the entire storyline was driven by the thought that being "with it" was good box office. You look at other popcorn movies of the time, like WarGames or TRON, and you see some of the same "parallel thinking" that you still see in the movie business now.

Re: Superman (casting, rumors, pix till release)

Michael Shannon small interview

OG: What can you tell us about the scale of ďMan of SteelĒ?
MS: Itís unlike anything Iíve ever done. Itís massive sets. Itís literally another world. Itís the first time Iíve acted on another planet.

OG: What is it like acting on a set like that?
MS: As much green screen as there is and Iím sure will be, theyíre actually building a lot of the sets as well. I had thought it was just going to be green screens everywhere and we would just be pretending everything. Thereís quite a bit of detail theyíre building and putting into it. Itís very helpful. The less green screen, the better ó I donít think youíd be able to find an actor on Earth who wouldnít have that sentiment.

OG: What drew you to the film?
MS: This is one of the biggest stories of all time: the Superman story. Its prevalence is enormous. And I remember watching the original films ó the [Richard] Donner films, and Terence Stamp in the role [of Zod], and the three Kryptonians ó it scared the crap out of me. It really left an impression on me. Someone asking me to follow in those footsteps seemed like the highest kind of challenge you could have as an actor. And I always like to be challenged.

OG: What can you say about the character of General Zod?
MS: Heís not one of these archetypal villains with horns coming out of his head and breathing fire or something. Heís a man, a Kryptonian man. Heís a general, thatís his main attribute. Thatís the way I approach it: playing a general. Iíve done military parts before, but Iíve only been up to sergeant, so this is a big promotion.

Yeah, but they probably would want a different feel altogether for a reboot. Probably a minimalist score. Batman's 'theme' music in the recent films, for example, is like three notes, and that's it. and joker's theme is, uh, one note. Still very effective.

The problem is that our culture has almost beyond memorable themes

As it was in the 70s before composers like Williams and Goldsmith helped bring them back into favor. Looks like it's time for a new musical renaissance.

^ Yeah. Michael Giacchino's work on 'Star Trek' was a good start in the right direction. I can't imagine Superman without a big fanfare.

Re: Superman (casting, rumors, pix till release)

The good news is that Tyler Bates, Snyder's frequent collaborator has been fairly busy as of late with projects so that means we could get someone totally new regarding the composer. I've been personally hoping for John Powell. The other reason that i doubt that the IMDB thing about Williams is real is because they have stated that they are going for a complete separation from the previous films with this movie.

The last decent movie score to me was Gladiator, and this was 11 years ago.

I'm guessing "Star Wars" is right up there as well.

Star Wars and Superman were the two major themes from my early childhood. I was two when Star Wars came out and three-I think-when Superman came out. Those themes are burned into my mind forever and I'm glad to have them there.

I agree
And it worked very well in Superman Returns also.
Though now Williams has to go against his own masterpiece and do something equally great..and I am sure he will do a good score. Maybe we see some of the old notes there, too
