However, his imagery and the power of his imagination are absolutely undeniable. The whole Old God/Ancient Ones mythos is spellbinding, and his sci-fi and horror influence is still felt broadly.

I'm taking a crack at the Howard stories because hell why not. Just finished The Phoenix and the Sword, which the internet assures me is the first of his Conan tales. While I always did find it odd that a Cimmerian (i.e. Crimean) hero had a Gaelic name I had no idea it was intentional before reading this, but him throwing around Badb and Morrigan as curses is kind of a clue. It was a fun bit of bloody business at court, anyway.
