^That's true. "Riddles in the Dark" was revised: the original version followed the story that Bilbo told Gandalf and the dwarves afterward.

Yet strangely, no one ever accused Tolkien of raping their childhood.

Re: THE HOBBIT (2012/2013): News, Rumors, Pics Till Release

Ian McKellen just confirmed that Benedict Cumberbatch will be a part of Hobbit. And from the description, it sounds like BC will be Smaug, esp. considering the "what can he be playing?" line.

I saw that earlier today and that's my impression as well. I can't wait for the verbal jousting between Freeman and Cumberbatch.

The way McKellen answered the question certainly does make it sound like that's what he'll be playing.

I can just see it now: As Bilbo walked through the tunnel towards the dragon's lair, he heard "bored, BORED, BORED!" bellowed down.

I can actually see PJ doing that, too.

I don't know how Bilbo could walk though that tunnel with all that Smaug in it.

Re: THE HOBBIT (2012/2013): News, Rumors, Pics Till Release

More Cumberbatch news (just when you didn't think there would be more):

Benedict Cumberbatch Voicing Smaug AND The Necromancer!

Close on the heels of their exclusive that Luke Evans has been cast in the role of Bard the Bowman, Deadline.com has broken another exclusive that Benedict Cumberbatch will be voicing the character of both Smaug the Dragon and the Necromancer in The Hobbit.
Via Deadline.com: After reporting today that Luke Evans will play Bard in the Peter Jackson-directed The Hobbit and wondering who’ll voice the dragon Smaug, Deadline can now tell you that it will be Benedict Cumberbatch. He’ll portray Smaug via motion capture. He is already on the picture, providing the voice of the character Necromancer.
Head over to Deadline.com for the complete article.
Oh, yeah, and Luke Evans (not, unfortunately, David Tennant) is Bard the Bowman.

Smaug and the Necromancer? Nice.

I was never on the 'Tennant as Bard' bandwagon. He's too skinny and scrawny, IMO.

Isn't a bard a minstrel or something? The guy shot an arrow. There's no reason he couldn't be scrawny. But it doesn't particularly matter to me either way.

A Bard is a storyteller, modern day would generally refer to a writer specifically, I believe

His name is Bard, but he's not a bard. And, IIRC, to be any good at archery (at least prior to modern compound bows with all the fancy technology) you usually needed good upper body strength.

Yeah, but I could still see Tennant filling that role. You don't need to be hulking to fit the role.
