Re: Smallville10x21&22 "Finale" Discuss/Grade

I am completely and utterly conflicted about the episode. Half of of me thought it was brilliant, and the other half thinks it was the most bloody awful piece of shit I've ever seen.

Part One really was a complete waste of time. Even at SV's lowest of low it never squandered away valuable screen-time in such epic proportions. Three of the acts were identical--I mean literally! It would would have been one thing to be that dreadfully repetitive in a mid-season filler, but this was the show's last episode. Then the proverbial salt in the wound is when we found out that they don't even get married, so the whole thing was just a total waste of time!

All in all, the whole Lex thing was stupid and pointless. Lutherstien's Monster was just absurd, even for a comic book show. But more than that, I feel like Lex was shoehorned into the show just for the sake of it. I think they should have just left him for dead.

For one thing, I just could never get excited over Rosenbaum returning as everyone else did. Never thought he was THAT great of an actor. It just that he was usually either opposite Glover who is one of those guys who is so fucking good he makes everyone around him better, or opposite Welling who is ... well, Welling. On his own, he just comes across as somewhat bland.

But the mind whip was plain stupid. Other than being a painfully trite DEM, it was also contradictory to the basic nurture v. nature element of the show and the whole point to the Clark/Lex dyad.. Hell, the episode's main theme was rooted in NvN. What were they thinking? It's like they paint an entire room red except one little corner just because they had a can of blue paint.

Freeman seemed to be the only one in the main cast who bothered to show up for work which is surprising because I'm surprised that when she was handed the script she didn't answer with a: .

There was a million other things wrong with it, but I don't want to bother.

That all said, the geek-out moments were awesome and there were enough of those throughout to hold my attention. Essentially I was the poor dog falling for the occasional snausage while someone jams stuff up my ass. I was too distracted to notice the shitfest while I was watching.

Ultimately though, they could have done better--well, at least had "they" been someone else.

Cassidy Freeman is a seasoned pro at giving solid work for WTF scripts.

And on further reflection, that sentence could've probably used some more punctuation.

I voted excellent.
Except for the god aweful CGI and TW appearrantly not wanting to be seen as Superman in the suit, I thought it ended the way it was supposed to.

As for all the bitching and moaning that has gone on, "C'mon man!!! This is "Smallville", NOT the New New Adventures of Superman"! For all those that condemn the episode that haven't been faithful viewers through all 10 seasons is just full of utter BS.
I went into this show cautious of all the news I read about it ( NTNF, Clark and Lex becoming "BBF's"...etc.) that I have always thought it was a kind of "Elseworlds" take on the mythos. And do know what?...it worked.

@MattMitovich
CORRECTION! #Smallville finale draws 2.97 million viewers, 1.3 demo rating (across 2 hours).

3.35 million people were watching the final half-hour of #Smallville finale

Ok, Officially...
The two hour Smallville series finale rose 63% from last week’s one hour episode, and its 1.3 adults 18-49 rating tied a season high. Our polled readers turned out to be overly optimistic.
8:00 CW Smallville 1.2 5 2.813
8:30 CW Smallville 1.2 4 2.799
9:00 CW Smallville 1.3 4 2.928
9:30 CW Smallville 1.5 5 3.347
Quite a jump in that last half hour.

Wow, that was bad.
An hour-and-a-half of everyone telling Clark how awesome he is and that it's his time, so long as he embraces both his human and Kryptonian side (a conflict he's resolved how many times now?). He's ultimately inspired by a Jor-El induced montage of.....himself?

Follow with another "his greatest challenge) foe that is built up over an entire season only to be easily dispensed with in about 2 minutes.

Return of Lex - that is pretty pointless, does next to nothing except kill Tess for no reason and gets his memory wiped...wha??? So he doesn't remember anything, but he's still evil and Clark's Nemesis, just because? Their relationship building over the first seven seasons now means....nothing???

Return of Chloe....that also does nothing.

CGI Superman suit for a couple of minutes.

Major letdown. Hoped the writers could pull something great for the end. Instead got overly forced, excessive attempts the pull your heart strings and another easy-way-out for the "greatest hero ever."

The show was basically everything BAD about comic books wrapped into two hours.

@Checkmate...how am I deluding myself when Tess herself actually said that she was doing that to redeem herself? The character actually said that to Lex, and he had an understanding expression on his face. There was more to that scene than just the mind wipe. Okay...I'll conceed that the scene wasn't "more to do" that was the wrong phrase of words to use. Lex's mind wipe was the sole focus of the scene but it was also to conclude Tess's arc.
I do stand corrected, the scene did have two purposes. One to wipe Lex's memory, two to get rid of Tess for the same reason they wiped Lex's memory.

The "omg, I'm doing this to redeem myself!" malarkey was just the window dressing. She could have said anything at all during that scene and it wouldn't have changed a bit. Lex's memory is gone, Tess is out of the story. Fini. Move on the next to-do list item.

I think it's more like every bad thing about the CW.

Actually, it wasn't a bad episode of Smallville and it had its moments but it also really crystallizes a lot of the complaints. I was hoping against hope that they might elevate their game for the end.

I think it's funny how many people in this thread want Oliver's son to be named Roy when in the comics it's actually Connor Hawke.

Really, it was chalk full of massive plot-holes...

Younger Jimmy Olsen looking identical to his older dead brother, and looking too old as well. .
How is this a plot hole? All they did was bring back an actor who was on the show for a while. Which seems like a nice thing to do in a finale.

The truth is that Tom Welling would not have looked good in ANY Superman suit. He's too beefy for the superman look. I know, hes not fat by any means. But skin tight spandex is NOT forgiving. And did we reall expect Tom Welling to do a little extra working out and maybe diet to lose 5-10 pounds of beefy fat on his arms? Not for 30 seconds in the suit.
Too bad Tom Welling is a Prima-Donna and a Deuche. I am soo happy this cock-tease of a show is dead.

Black Canary/Alaina Huffman looks better without the Black Canary garb...

Maybe Ollie and Chloe will get a divorce. Or maybe he'll stay married to Chloe and maintain a working relationship with Black Canary.
