Re: URBAN FANTASY

Since when does Twilight count as urban fantasy? That takes place mostly in extremely rural Washington.

My personal favourite in the genre, though I haven't read a lot of it, is probably Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman. I don't think I've ever read a book that takes advantage of its urban setting quite so much as that one. Though Mark Millar's The Good Fairies of New York, which I recently read for the first time, does come close. However, I didn't find the plot as engaging as Gaiman's work.

I like Patricia Briggs, Jennifer Estep, Faith Hunter, Marjorie Liu, C.E. Murphy, Rob Thurman, Karen Marie Moning, Kalayna Price, Kat Richardson, Phaedra Weldon, S.L.Wright.... and several others. I probably read more Urban Fantasy than any other genre now. I used to read mainstream mysteries but they got to be the same thing over and over.

Shadowrun is probably the ultimate example of urban fantasy as far as I'm concerned.

I'm glad someone brought up Laurel K. Hamilton. Anita Blake blows "Twilight" and "True Blood" out of the water and she deserves her own show or movie.

Another good one, if you can find it, is The Wizard of Pigeons by Megan Lindholm (aka "Robin Hobb). I have a special fondness for that one since it's set in downtown Seattle.

Timothy: You'd probably also like Carrie Vaughn's "Kitty Norville" series, which involves a female werewolf with her own radio show.

Since timothy doesn't seem to be very far along in the series...

Tim Powers is great, but I'm not sure I think of him as urban fantasy. Books like The Anubis Gates and On Stranger Tides are more gonzo historical fantasy . . . .

Here's hoping the new Pirates of the Caribbean movie makes him a household name!

Amen to that.. I was thinking of the Last Call/Expiration Date/Earthquake Weather series, not the historical ones.

Good point. I admit I've fallen behind in my Powers reading. I'm mostly familar with his early historical fantasies like The Stress of Her Regard . . . .
