I really want this conversation to happen:

Secondary character: Who are you?

Logan: I'm The Wolverine

SC: Really? You've named yourself after the Wolverine?

Logan: Yeah, you know wolves and stuff.. me in the wild with the wolves.. that sort of hardcore stuff

SC: Em.. a Wolverine isn't a type of wolf, it's a weasel.

Logan: Yeah.. wolves and stuff and... what? A weasel? I'm named after a weasel?
Cute.

See, this is one reason it bugs me that they cast someone as tall as Hugh Jackman in the role. Wolverine is called that because he's small and scrappy like a wolverine. As far as I know, the movies have offered no alternative explanation for why someone who's 6'3" would adopt that name.

If there is a chance that we will get Patch in this movie, I'll be even more excited.

Re: Aronofsky's Wolverine film title announced

it sucks. why not called it 'Wolverine 2'? it's no different to Star Trek II being the next movie after the motionless picture but a stand-alone flick.

'The Wolverine' sounds crap.

thank christ the new Bat-flick didn't get called 'The Batman', that would've been lame with 'the wolverine' as well...

And what do they mean, not a sequel? Just that it won't be directly referencing any events or plotlines from the previous movie? Or that it will be in a different continuity altogether despite having the same star? It sounds like just a bit of spin control to distance themselves from the previous film.
I can't work it out either. I agree with your spin comment. But I can't help wondering if it means that the movie might be set post X3?

This along with X-Men: First Class is getting me excited about X-Men movies again. Honestly, I know this sounds almost blasphemousness considering my reputation, but I'm quite possibly looking forward to both The Wolverine and X-Men: First Class more than The Dark Knight Rises at this point.
You're so fickle.

Unless they have a reason, they probably won't give it any definite time frame. It could happen either before or after for all it matters.

Any guesses on which random mutant cameos will be in the movie?

^ Knowing Aaranoksly, I'd say damn few. And I'd say you're right about the non-specific time setting (after all, for all the previous movie's prequel setting, it had no notion of period setting or authenticity anyway).

Re: Aronofsky's Wolverine film title announced

What's not to get about it? It is a stand alone film that will ignore elements of the first film and quite frankly that's a good thing in my opinion, much like "X-Men:First Class" is doing the same thing ignoring elements from the film, particularly concerning Emma.

^ But to say it's not a sequel, when it's a movie featuring the same title character, not to mention a character who was essentially the lead in 3 other movies? Sounds a bit like movie spin bullshit.

Perhaps this is the new 'reboot.' They're rebooting the term reboot.

Probably because they want to distance themselves from the shitty first movie. And why shouldn't they? If Aronofsky makes the great Wolverine movie I hope for, I'll be happy if I don't ever have to think about the "X-Men Origins" one when I watch it.

I'm actually quite excited for "X-Men: First Class" as well as "The Wolverine" simply because of the filmmakers involved. I wouldn't have thought that was even possible after "X-Men 3" and "X-Men Origins: Wolverine". Therefore, in my book, the more they distance themselves from their immediate predecessors, the better.

Re: Aronofsky's Wolverine film title announced

Really it's a trivial thing and doesn't really matter. Why we discuss these things like they're going to be the reasons the movie does well or not baffles me. To echo the thoughts of AvBaur which I agree with, yes this is most likely an attempt to distance themselves from the previous film which almost everyone disliked and thought was a piece of shite. The fact that there is a profound effort to make second film more entertaining and more in tune with the Wolverine we know from the comics should be encouraging, everything else is immaterial and doesn't matter. As long as it's a good film I don't really give a rats ass.
