I've read both "Birthright" and "All-Star Superman" which condenses the Kryptonian origin down to a splash page. Again though if it's Clark traveling the world we wouldn't see Krypton unless it was through some kind of flashback sequence. To use "Batman Begins" again no one had a problem rehashing Bruce's origins, which everyone is familiar with and it was told in a relatively new way for a general audience to understand. I could see the Superman film going in a similar direction.
But while we'd seen the murder of Bruce Wayne's parents in flashback in Tim Burton's movie and in Batman Forever, we'd never seen it properly told, nor had we seen why Bruce decided to become the Batman, how he trained, how he got his toys & gadgets. Similarly, Casino Royale got away with telling the origins of another well-established franchise hero because we'd never seen Bond's early days or first mission.

Fair enough, I'm from a generation that saw Superman The Movie in the cinemas, so I'm biased. But I just don't think there's any great need to re-tell his origins. There's been that movie, there's been Smallville, there's even been a brief recap and flashback sequence in Returns. Do we really need it told again?

I wouldn't mind a portion of the movie being devoted to his origin, even in flashback. I just don't want them spending too much time focusing on Krypton and then his childhood.

But if the movie depicts this as Superman's first adventure in this new universe or it is his first appearance to mankind, I'm alright with that.

Well, the thing is that the so-called "origin story" is the quintessential Superman story. That is why variations of it have played out not only in movies but dozens of times in the comics, on television from The Adventures Of Superman to Smallville, and even in novels.
Superman comics are read by about 50,000 hardcore fans (I'm one of them) and Smallville doesn't actually seem to have Superman in it (at least not of the type the film will feature).

I think we're all still jumping to conclusions with the plot...which hasn't been confirmed btw.

^ Batman Begins was supposed to reflect Superman The Movie; an epic, starry origin story. I'm not sure we need another take on that type of tale, especially given how durable Superman:TM has been and given that Smallville covers much the same ground.
Okay, I'll bite. What ground is Smallville covering exactly?
Shaky?

Re: Zack Snyder will direct SUPERMAN

I think a simple way to sum up the origin is with a small paragraph. "Rocketed to Earth from the planet Krypton....ect."Like they used to do in the old cartoons. Then if Braniac is involved show his ship barrelling out into space right as Krypton explodes, right behind Clark's ship. Similar to Zod in the phantom zone. There's your opening sequence and origin wrapped up in the first 5-10 minutes. Another aproach would be Spiderman style and just show the opening credits with the comic book pages unfolding. It could show a quick update of events leading up to wherever they start the story. Bam, the origin agian is sewn up nice and tight, no muss, no fuss. I really don't think anyone needs to see half of the movie devoted to the origin. Even non Superman fans have a vauge idea that Supes is an alien, they may not know where he comes from or his fathers name, but they know enough. I say that because my wife is a perfect example, she's Russian and has no interest in comics at all, but she knew who Superman was and knew he came from another planet. Now that was when we first met, now a day's she loves Bat boy and all Nolan films(Inception is her favorite) and she likes Ironman and last year she even watched Star Trek and liked it. This is someone who hates Star Trek, even though she's never watched one episode. Women, there crazy. My point bieng, unless you've been living under a rock for the paST 75 years, you know Superman.

Re: Zack Snyder will direct SUPERMAN

Hollywood Insider is reporting that Noah Bean, from Damages, and an unnamed actor from True Blood are to audition for the main role.

http://www.whatsplaying.com.au/2010/...insider-61010/

Bean looks almost exactly like Routh, IMHO and would be a perfect choice if this were a follow up to Returns but Brandon wasn't returning. As it's not, I wonder what the point in auditioning him would be - most casual viewers would probably think it's the same guy.

As for the True Blood actor ... hmmm. Ryan Kwanten? In great shape but too small and lithe - more of a Daredevil physique. Stephen Moyer? Probably too old. Alexander Skaarsgard? Well, dye his hair black and he's basically perfect. That would be a nice consolation for him after losing the Thor role.

The dude who played the werewolf on True Blood looks like he's got the right look and physique for it.

Joe Manganiello is another possibility from True Blood. He's openly lobbied for the part.

Looks like they're going to go for someone fairly unknown. I don't watch either of those shows but know some of the actors on them, interesting.

Bean looks nothing like Routh - and he stands about one inch taller than 5'6" Rose Byrne. Pic

I call foul on that rumor.

This may have been mentioned already, but another rumor is that Armie Hammer is in the mix. He was going to play Batman in George Miller's Justice League: Mortal. He's 6' 5", 24 years old, and just got a boost from his part in The Social Network.
