Re: Zack Snyder will direct SUPERMAN

I've thought about it and if the plot is true about Clark traveling the world in a journalistic capacity to 'find himself' similar to how "Batman Begins" depicted Bruce's travels and his training then I've no problem with this. As long as it doesn't take up a huge chunk of the movie. As for the film having an established Superman, nothing was ever said about that. These reports and rumors are the first outside of the tidbits Nolan gave us back in March about the script. Both "Superman: The Movie" and the comics have depicted Clark "training" or traveling the world before coming to Metropolis to become Superman. "Smallville" has gone in a totally different direction in showing this. Until we get some kind of confirmation though on the plot all of it is rumors and speculation.

Seems Nolan is looking to repeat the Batman Begins hook of his main character wandering the world, preparing to become a hero:

Except, unlike Lazenby, Routh was actually talented!
I'll be curious to go look and see how it ranks in our thread * here but by and large On Her Majesty's Secret Service is widely regarded as one of the top Bond films. That is due to Lazenby as much as anything.
I'd say it's in more in spite of Lazenby than because of him.

Not so thrilled by this. I think Snyder's film making is over stylised and I am worried he's going to mess this up. However hoping for the best with Nolan around.

I'd thought that this movie was supposed to start with an established Superman. That's what I personally would prefer.
Agreed. There's absolutely no need for Snyder to waste an hour of screen time rehashing the origin of Superman. The origin presented by Donner should be allowed to stand. I'd make an exception for the design of the Fortress of Solitude. I want Snyder's production designer to create a new one that isn't made of crystal.

That's what gives me pause. While Batman has the potential for a lot of different interpretations, I think Superman fills a specific heroic archetype. Routh was doing a riff on Christopher Reeve, which is about as perfect as you can get. To move much beyond that is to create something that isn't really Superman.
Oy - I don't think I will ever understand the Chris Reeve fetish. He was not the end-all, be-all of live action interpretations of Superman.

Ever read Birthright? It condenses the essentials of the origin down to one page, then follows Clark as he travels the world, working out his journalistic destiny. It then explores his first year at the Daily Planet in some detail and does a really nice wrap around with Jor-El and Lara. It's not a brilliant book, but it's a nice, solid look at Superman's early years.

I always thought Birthright was a great example about how to approach a contemporary Superman movie that didn't re-do the origins but sort of skimmed them.

Origins could be summed up with another opening title sequence, ala Watchmen. It's cliche but its effective and gets it out of the way.

Re: Zack Snyder will direct SUPERMAN

I've read both "Birthright" and "All-Star Superman" which condenses the Kryptonian origin down to a splash page. Again though if it's Clark traveling the world we wouldn't see Krypton unless it was through some kind of flashback sequence. To use "Batman Begins" again no one had a problem rehashing Bruce's origins, which everyone is familiar with and it was told in a relatively new way for a general audience to understand. I could see the Superman film going in a similar direction.

I don't see the problems with an origins film - the last one was 32 years ago - what's wrong with this generation having their Superman?

I think if Nolan and Goyer are creative, which they are, they can do a modern take on the origin story that is still relevant and fresh.

Well, the thing is that the so-called "origin story" is the quintessential Superman story. That is why variations of it have played out not only in movies but dozens of times in the comics, on television from The Adventures Of Superman to Smallville, and even in novels.

I think the problem is that we have had too many origin stories in the last 10 years or so. Everyone that is a fan of Superman knows his origins I don't really want to see another origin story about him.

If they do make an origin story I will see it and won't complain...I just prefer not to have one.

The origin story is the Superman story...it may not have to dominate a whole picture...but should be part of the reboot. Even if it takes place in the form of flash backs.
