'Gravity' (2012) dir. by Alfonso Cuarón 3D sci-fi space thriller

Alfonso Cuarón's forthcoming Gravity,

This Gravity, which starts filming this summer, will star Angelina Jolie and Robert Downey Jr., and will be about a sole survivor of a space disaster who fights to return to her daughter on Earth.
Downey will play the leader of a team posted at a remote space station. “While he and a female colleague are traveling outside the space station, the other team members are decimated by debris from an exploded satellite.” The female lead has yet to be cast.
this does sound a little like Red Planet (2000) in the first act when Mars-1 ship encountered a solar flare which required the crew to leave behind the mission commander played by Carrie-Anne Moss to put out a fire and possibly the sole survivor of the mission.

The film will apparently be 60% CGI, shot using a high balance of hybrid CG and live action elements like Avatar.
Downey Jr will “start production on the Alfonso Cuaron-directed 3D space film ‘Gravity,’ leave to shoot ‘Sherlock Holmes 2,’ and then return to finish with Cuaron.” Sherlock 2 is scheduled to hit theaters for Christmas 2011, so we can probably expect to see Cuaron’s film in 2012.

# The entire film will be made here at Framestore. In effect the film, as Avatar was, is 60% CG feature animation with the balance being hybrid CG and live action elements.
# Starring Robert Downey Junior, the film is a contemporary survival thriller that follows a woman as she attempts to make her way back to earth after a satellite crash sets off a chain reaction of further crashes. Because it’s set in space, most shots require every element to float in zero-gravity.

This sounds very cool.

FYI there is another film tentatively titled 'Gravity' in development about "a father who has to search for his lost child as the world stops spinning »with Louis Leterrier as a director sort-of attached. There is also another thread for that: Louis Leterrier's feature currently called 'Gravity'

One of those links says Angelina isn't in it anymore. Someone in the comments suggested Charlize Theron instead - good idea. Or how about taking a chance on a no-name? They've got RDjr to get butts in seats.

Sounds interesting. I like Cuaron's style, and I like sci-fi, so this should be good.

Scarlett Johansson Takes Angelina Jolie's Role

Angelina Jolie was director Alfonso Cuaron's first choice but moved on to Johansson after Jolie turned him down.
Scarlett will play the sole survivor of a failed space mission who tries to make her way back to Earth.

really can Johansson do the lead role?

Probably not. She's got no chemistry with Robert Downey Jr. It's like pairing a poodle and a dolphin.

I'm actually really looking forward to this movie...and I think Charlize Theron would have been an excellent choice for the female lead. Scarlett Johannson? Interesting but seems wrong.

'Gravity' (2012) casting update

"Gravity, the 3D film that Warner Bros is mobilizing with director Alfonso Cuaron and Robert Downey Jr., is suddenly in danger of falling back to earth after Angellina Jolie said no to a full court press and a big money offer to star in the film. It has put Warner Bros in a bind. The studio needs an actress who can hold the screen and draw an audience to an $80 million film. Much like Tom Hanks' role in Cast Away, the Gravity heroine is the only person onscreen for a large part of the movie."

Hmm it was mentioned in July already. Not sure if this is actual news this month...

Do you think anyone will bother to let those idiots know that the earth's rotation does not cause gravitational attraction before they film it? There's lazy movie science and then there's "give me a fucking break".

Have you ever heard of the notion of altering actual science fact to tell a science fiction story for creative effect? This happens all the time...don't see it as a big deal and you've not even seen it used in the film yet before you judge it.

^No, this is the equivalent of someone running a regular gasoline engine on water, it's inexcusably ignorant. No free pass; this is bout 10x as egregious as a movie like The Core.

Seriously, if the movie is about the earth's rotation slowing down, causing gravity to "go away", those people are too stupid to write science fiction.

I really enjoyed 2012, so I want you to see where I'm coming from when I say that rotation thing is bullshit.

Cuaron's Gravity on the other hand has me very excited. Hope it gets made.

I enjoy gravity. I use gravity on a daily basis. Lots of films feature gravity; but how many films are really about gravity? I look forward to Gravity.

That is, the one that isn't shit-itself retarded.

Re: 'Gravity' (2012) dir. by Alfonso Cuarón 3D sci-fi space thriller

Having had a chance to read the script for "Gravity" earlier this year and was originally hesitate about it I was blown away and read it twice. Don't have the script any more but after a slow start...there really is a near twenty minute opening shot that will either awe or bore audiences right off the bat...picks up and is pretty intense throughout the film. Since I finished reading it I've been really looking forward to the film.

Natalie Portman has been offered the lead in "Gravity". I would be really happy if she took the part...
