Yeah, he was a great character and the character deserved better. But the actor didn't want to be there and that's a shame.

Like how Jacob knew who to touch as kids. He knew they'd be on the plane. Also, how they survived the crash. They couldn't die just yet. Looks like Jacob's faith in this fact also plays a role.

The whole tone of this retrospective makes me feel they are definitely going for the altered reality.

Edit. Well it did end in the alternate reality. Which was in fact a waiting station for heaven.
