Re: Whatever happened to Starship Exeter?

Well, I certainly never found Richards to be annoying. Awkward, trying to find her place, trying to prove herself... but not annoying. I think the world of her!

I must re-watch the episode. You guys lost me a little bit there. I understand why the Garrovick / Richards scene, the "chat over chili" scene, was cut back some, but I found the longer version to be quite amazing too.

Just seems, however you cut it, it really is a GREAT episode. Just heard Dennis at the Phase II forum suggest something interesting... http://forums.startreknewvoyages.com....msg129879#new

Well, there we had a little bit of insight into why the last Exeter chapter won't be seen until discovered by Archaeologists in the 23rd Century.

They should have left the Richards scene intact, even if she was annoying. Part of the fun of Exeter, at least for me, is that both Garrovick and Harris are both completely unlikable as lead characters, yet amusingly so. An annoying Richards would have fit right in with that dynamic.

The Garrovick/Richards scene, in its original entirety - and that is not represented, really, even by the longer version that's available - just did not work. I think I may have addressed this at some earlier point.

Re: Whatever happened to Starship Exeter?

I agree that the "chili" scene as originally done did not work. Seeing the various versions, my experience in editing tells me that what was released wasn't the best compromise possible. I will credit the core Exeter team for not being thin-skinned, though. They're able to accept fair critique and not overreact to it. I've been fairly brutal with my feedback on scripts and edits, and no one's ever acted like that was a bad thing.

Chili and coffee? Who eats that? Dennis said that the original scene dialogue which I liked better too was somehow unconsciously appropriated from somewhere/something else. I particularly liked the reference to the teacher who was proud of him and told him 'You're a romantic..' or something like that in an age when that could get you killed.

Me, at the Tastee Diner in Silver Spring, MD about twenty minutes before writing the scene.

Their chili's nothing to brag about, BTW, though the cornbread is okay. They make a nice BLT.

I don't know how conscious or unconscious it was, because it wasn't I who came up with it - part of the scene was provided to me as a suggestion, and I just used it with thanks. It was, obviously, quite a bit later that the copying was called to my attention by a third party and I had a pretty unsatisfactory discussion about it with the other writer. I insisted that it all come out, and when the situation was made clear to the producers there wasn't any argument about it. Did leave us with a problem, though.

Re: Whatever happened to Starship Exeter?

So Dennis, what happened last week "that may hasten the release of Act IV," as you put it? What you posted at Phase II sounded very promising. Anything you can tell us?

I did visit the exeterstudio.com website and I'm sure you know what update it had for us... "It's Here! Act Three!"

Sorry for prying, but I sure am curious! I told my six-year-old son about your hint that the conclusion may be coming soon because the two of us really really really want to see it! Of all the fan Trek we have watched there's something about that episode that we really love. And we can't wait to see how it will end. (Even though, in fact, we've been waiting...)

P.S. Up here in Canada, Tim Hortons serves a mean bowl of chili and they do offer it in a combo: Chili, Coffee and Donut. I didn't think anyone actually ordered that combo, but now you know, Dennis: it's here in Canada waiting for you

Hey, I eat chili with coffee, too.

And, mmmmm, Tastee Diner! Didn't get to go on the last Polaris shoot. Wah!

I can testify to that. A number of elements (especially backstory) I used in the unfilmed "Atlantis Invaders" came from others working on the production. Considering how much "borrowing" goes on in fan productions, I'm certain that the plot element in question could have been tweaked so that I would have been seen as anything much more than an homage, but Dennis was right to raise the red flag on the principle and have it cut.

Re: Whatever happened to Starship Exeter?

It was actually quite a bit of dialogue in addition to a character name - IIRC - and just had to go. Now, the person in question who suggested it later insisted that it hadn't been intended for it to be mistaken for original writing and I will assume that's possible - the stuff was from a popular novel by a very well-known sf writer, and it may have been assumed that I'd recognize it without having it pointed out. Obviously I didn't, nor did anyone else on the production - including the producers - who read the script in multiple drafts over a period of months.

And now, that's the last I'll say about it.

I finally saw what's been released of "Intersection" yesterday.

It was great fun. Thanks to everyone involved

As for act IV...based on the 700 episodes and 11 Trek films I've seen and hundreds of Trek books I've read I hearby conclude that it ends with the Exeter crew saving the day!

Actually the Exeter collapses in on itself in act IV. It was a horrible mess. Don't listen to them, they're a bunch of liers.

Re: Whatever happened to Starship Exeter?

Any news?

Dennis you suggested that something might be happening a few weeks ago. Is it happening?

I keep checking the starshipexeter website, but, well, we all know how that goes.

How will Garrovick save the day? Why do I have this fear that Vandi is in danger?
