Sombrero Hats on avatar's am i missing something?

Feel like i should be slapping one on Scotty but have no idea what the hell it is about

It's a peculiar little meme that started in the original Star Trek XI forum. There were suggestions that the new Enterprise should be wearing a sombrero, and it kind of exploded from there.

Sadly, no sombreros made it into the final film.
