I'd welcome a show like SF Vortex, which Sci-Fi Channel aired during the 90's. Harlan Ellison used to rant and rave on that program.

This doesn't surprise me. As I'm sure many people who take a deeper interest in WTF is Sci/Sy Fi/Fy doing know, Bonnie Hammer, the president of the network, hates sci fi. She's been at this for years and is responsible for the biggest thrusts away from original sci fi programming in favor of crap like wrestling and other unreleated scifi/fantasy/horror elements to them.

And any cookery show that SyFy airs has to be hosted by Ethan Phillips in full character as Neelix.
Didn't he release a cookbook as his character Neelix?

A talk show that specifically talked about and interviewed luminaries of sci-fi across all it's mediums would be good. But I doubt that is what they mean.
Whoa! you are thinking way too much of SyFy.
I believe the last talk show they had was "Crossing Over with John Edward" (1999) (TV series) around 2001 as initially it was on USA Network. later it became syndicated.
The show was had very dark sets. When it was syndicated for season 3 or 4 they added blue carpeting and wood paneling on the set for the syndicated daytime-talkshow-crowd homogenized look.

I think it would have to be a show along the lines of Strange phenomenon or ghosts or paranormal. They can't go all sciencey or it would be Discovery Channel/National Geographic/History Channel/Science Channel territory

I can see if SyFy does a dinner and a movie type show like TNT or TBS though.

More like Sci-Fry! The genre channel is rumored to be exploring more reality fare, including a chat show and a culinary show.

Hello, and welcome to another edition of TV.com Whines About Poor Programming Decisions by a Network We Fear is Going Down the Tubes. Today we'll be discussing one of our favorites, SciFi Channel SyFy, which is in the process of "redefining" itself -- much like a post-pubescent woman does upon entering high school.

That is, it sacrifices substance and forgets where it came from in an attempt to get more attention. And SyFy's version of a cleavage-baring tube top and high heels is (possibly) a foray into cooking and talk shows. To this we say, "SyFy, stop being such a damn slut!"
According to an article on the all-things-science-fiction blog io9, a "source" -- who's had meetings with the soul-crushing suits that run the new SyFy -- claims the network is looking at developing a cooking show and a talk show, thus further separating itself from the realm of the nerds.
I can hardly wait.
Bah!

Alton Brown doing a show about the science of cooking would fit okay on Scif...er..."SyFy"...

(And "AB" is a self-admitted sci-fi geek to boot!)

'cept that pretty much what he already does on "Good Eats" on the Food Network...

How about "Iron Chef Space"...???

Oh, wait. What was I thinking? They've already been there. Forgot about that.
Ghost Hunters is a fictional drama? I thought it was a particularly bad "reality show" and have therefore been ignoring it.

By fictional drama, I mean they have to admit it's fiction.

Re: SyFy considering doing Cooking and Talk Shows...

The channel has turned into bull pucky. WWE, UFC, Ghost Hunters, seriously stupid movies, weak show that only air maybe once a year or so and all of that... now a cooking show? Whatever as I already know how to cook.

The channel long ago turned to airing the asme old same old every week and now has turned to the "I am a 13 year old kid" channel.

SyFy's programming Summer 2010

Oh they are going there.
a heightened focus on reality TV.

Damn. NBC Universal owns SyFy and they are doing it in this niche channel. So much for Science Fiction.
This pretty much is the nail in the coffin of this channel staying in the science fiction world at least starting on Thursdays...
a new bloc of Thursday reality TV, starting July 15, 2010.
http://io9.com/5496098/syfy-is-turni...d-tracy-morgan

also
Syfy announced it is currently developing eight new reality series
Force of Nature, The Latimer Project, Mr. Impossible, Paranormal Files, Face Off, The Dome Experiment, and Untitled Artifact Search Series.
each show has a detailed synopsis at the realitytvworld link below.
http://www.realitytvworld.com/news/m...ping-10608.php

One of the new shows:
The Dome Experiment
will document 12 test subjects from various walks of life and seal them in a bio-environment known as "The Dome."

The subjects will rely on each other for needs ranging from food and shelter to entertainment and security while also competing in various challenges and experiments
a cross between Big Brother/Fear Factor/Survivor...
reminds me a little of a show idea I thought about of scientists at the MARS research station in this thread:
idea for science docu-reality TV series

A 3 month+ sealed-in show idea has already been considered by the European Space Agency and Russian Academy of Science's Institute for Medical-Biological Problems project who were doing a real 105-day sealed in experiment with 6 people.
You can see a 2 minute video tour of the capsule here:
The BBC's Richard Galpin gets a sneak preview of the capsule

Well The Dome Experiment is produced by the same production company that makes:
"The Biggest Loser, "Breaking Bonaduce" (2005), "Supergroup" (2006), "Hammertime" (2009), "Beauty and the Geek" (2005) so that track record should give you a real example of what to expect of course closer to the production values of the cable TV reality shows and not the broadcast network reality show budgets...
I'm guessing 20-30 days similar to CBS' Big Brother and there will be a few women and possible intimate situations...just like MTV's The Real World.

FWIW, all of the shows at least have some vague connection to science, sci-fi, or fantasy. They'll probably still suck though.
