One link is the redone opening theme; the second link is a promo bit they did prior to the release of the film. Since Space Cruiser Yamato was what got me into anime in highschool back in 1978 (I saw the compilation film where they KEPT the original names and story, and then later the Starblazers U.S. dub version of Quest for Iscandar) - but I have to say, I still love the Japanese version of the opening theme to this day.

When I watched Starblazers on channel 29 out of Philadelphia about 30 years ago, I was already at the age where I thought I had outgrown cartoons. And I have to admit, a lot of the show struck me as silly and hokey even then. But there was also plenty there that suggested a pretty serious sci-fi adventure show, better than most of the live action sci-fi drek one could hope to see on American tv at that time. I'll always have a fondness for it, even though I never developed a taste for anime in general.

Please note that Starblazers is a rather poor dub of "Space Cruiser Yamato"..many themes of death and hopelessness were cut out or glossed over in the American TV show..also some of the more risque elements were removed (nudity etc.).

And just as many Japanese (not to forget young people in the West too) probably find American animation quite lacking-in story, plot, and art. Might want to keep that in mind when dissing anime.

Well Farewall to Space Battleship Yamato would not of gone down well as the Kid's timeslot that Starblazers was shown for most of.

Think I'll have to track down the earlier ones and see if they have a slightly happier endings

Just watching some of the clips on Youtube brought back some memories.

Building the Yamato/Argo out of Lego and Sandor (as he was in Starblazers) in somewasy reminded me of Kerr Avon from Blake's 7.

I don't know much about Yamato since it wasn't broadcast around here (they picked Harlock instead but I'm not complaining) but I would be very interested to watch it.

And discovering now that the Yamato blasted its way through the ice, it reminds me that Leiji Matsumoto also did it with Harlock SSX (the second series) when the Arcadia, built in an underground cave, blasts its way through the ground to reach the surface. It was truly awesome to the eyes of the 12 year old boy I was when I first saw it, and I still love it
