Anyone else notice the score slowing going lower and lower? When the movie was in its first few weeks Excellent/Above Average was at 90%, now its hardly above 80%. Interesting that this site rates the movie lower than Boxofficemojo and imdb.
Tough room.

Seriously, I'll bet there are far more TOS loyalists here than on the more mainstream sites. Oh well, it's not like they're ever going to get whatever it is that they wanted to get.

Yeah, people forget we're Trek fans. We had arguments over engine nacelles.

Engine nacelles.

More than that: arguments over the distance between engine nacelles.

I voted average. Having seen it without any prior Star Trek experience that's what it seemed like. If it wasn't for Spock I wouldn't give it a second thought. That part was excellent. The rest... eh.

Hell, we had entire fights because Kirk said "man" in one of the trailers.

Oh, and how about "enlist" versus "enroll?" The fans demand accountability!

Oh, I think I realized why I went to TNZ in the first place, for the relative calm.

Ain't that the truth?!

Shame we couldn't have lured some of the more trolly posters from here down to there.

Or vice versa.

Re: The Official STAR TREK Grading & Discussion Thread [SPOILERS]

Well, I just watched it all again in glorious Blu-ray, and I have to say it's just as fantastic as when I saw it those three times in the theater. Absolutely pure fun, great characters, beautiful visual effects, real chemistry between the cast and crew, just a great, great, great movie!

Still an A+ from me!

All I know is that right now I really, really want to see more of this Star Trek. I haven't felt this way about new Trek in well over a decade.

Re: The Official STAR TREK Grading & Discussion Thread [SPOILERS]

I just watched it again for the first time since it came out way back in May. This second time around, boy do I ever hate the special effects! They're just so busy and manic, I can never tell what's going on during the action sequences, especially the space battles. I haven't been so irritatingly disoriented since the action scenes in "Batman Begins". And I don't know why I never noticed the lens flares everyone complains about when I saw the movie for the first time, but this time they were burning my retinas from the first scene. Argh!

One thing I feel more positive about this time is the villain. I still think his back story and the logic behind his plan are idiotic, but just looking at the performance and his plan, I appreciate both more. I like the intensity Eric Bana brought to the role, and I liked how diabolical his plan was, wanting to destroy every Federation planet one at a time. That's one ballsy evil scheme. Points for ambition, even if his reasons are dumb.

This time I understand the hate for the Kobyashi Maru scene more (wow, Kirk/Pine was annoying as hell in that scene), but just as I felt the first time I saw it, by the end of the movie I liked all of the characters and the casting a lot. I liked Ben Cross more this time especially. The first time I was comparing him to Mark Lenard too much, so I was disappointed, but I think he did a good job now. And another opinion that hasn't changed upon re-watching: Urban nailed his character better than anyone else. I loved his interpretation of Bones.

So the second time, there were things I minded more than I had before, and things I minded less than before. I think it's quite a maddeningly inconsistent movie. The first time I saw it, I said I think it kind of jumped the shark and started to suck once Old Spock showed up. This time, I would say it never really gets bad and never recovers. It's more like it has a bunch of great scenes, then a bunch of stupid scenes, back and forth. By the end, I thought the good outweighed the bad, though, so huzzah!

I am really interested in opinions from those that had massive reservations about the canon being changed etc etc. What they thought of it, and if JJ abrams some felt were really destroying what they knew of Star Trek?
My objections were not so much with "change" per se, but rather what and how the changes were made. It was about 10 seconds into the film before I wondered: Why is the Kelvin reporting on "the looks” of some “it” which is “out of visual range” and implying lightning storms produce gravitational anomalies?

The film is replete with examples of shamefully shoddy writing, betraying the creators' lack of concern for general science or audience intelligence - and the treatment of women in the film is appalling.

To answer directly re: my opinion? This trek is a beautifully rendered, profit-maximizing travesty.

It's irritating, given the plot holes big enough to drive a planet killer through.
Agree 100%, with good acting, casting and cool effects unable to salvage this disaster.

Kirk also goes to the Academy about eight years earlier in the original timeline and is an experience, seasoned officer by the time he's assigned command of the Enterprise, whereas in this case, we're talking the "Top Gun" school of "rising through the ranks on the merits of being a smokin' hot bad boy!"
If you have watched this movie then could you be more specific about which scenes you disapprove of? If you have not seen this movie then your opinion is worthless.

I think almost every scene has problems, but let's test my theory: If someone would like to pick a scene, I'll check it for problems to which a reasonably alert viewer might have objections.
