What concerns me with the sequel is, after listening to the commentary where they talk about the post-crefits sequence that they were considering doing, coupled with typical Hollywood expectations - is that there is likely a fifty fifty chance they will not be able to resist putting Khan into the next movie.
Perhaps. Khan is pretty iconic as far as villains go...
But they also said they dropped the idea of that post-credit sequence (showing the Botany Bay) because they didn't want to be limited in their options and alternatives.

Sure they can.
It may lack originality but I guess I'd like seeing Khan again.

If they decide to use that character (with a similar background) why would he be younger?

I REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, REALLY (did I mention really), do NOT want to see Khan in the next movie (or any future Trek movie with this cast/crew). One of the most exciting things about how they approached this movie was to allow for the UNKNOWN. I will be very disappointed if they simply re-hash previous stories.

Oh, I'd love to see something new, original but I'd not be against a story including Khan.

I know many wouldn't mind or even like it. I'm just not one of them. Of course, I won't consider my childhood to have been raped if it is about Khan. I'll just go into it with an extremely sceptical eye.

I would bet a good hunk of money it will be Khan.

Not my preference at all.. but if it means the film is a huge success and they make another one I will be happy. Though if it leads to The Search for Spock I might have to swallow poison. Hopefully if it is Khan they don't kill of Spock because uhh.. it's not exactly a cliffhanger the second time round.

Re: The Official STAR TREK Grading & Discussion Thread [SPOILERS]

I expect it will be Khan. I would not be my personal choice but revitalizing existing material is what these writers seem to do best, so it might be the best choice for them, meaning in reality the best choice for us (the fans), since it is more likely to result in a good script and therefore a good movie.

They are going to make this film a "Dark Knight" of sorts, the movie that takes what was established in the reboot and introduces an iconic villain. Khan is the obvious choice, and probably the best choice from that point of view, as much as I would rather see something new in theory.

A couple of things to keep in mind, though:

1) I could see a re-imagined Khan being very cool. It doesn't really have to be the same character (think Jack Nicholson's Joker vs. Heath Ledger's Joker). It certainly doesn't need to be the same story. It might start like Space Seed, but as long as it goes in another direction from there, it could end up being pretty awesome. At any rate, the revenge element seems out of the question, so it won't be a remake of TWoK.

2) Khan might be the main antagonist, but there could be other new elements alongside of that. For example, after an initial scene involving the Botany Bay, the conflict could end up involving an alien world or civiliation we have never seen before.

Anyone else notice the score slowing going lower and lower? When the movie was in its first few weeks Excellent/Above Average was at 90%, now its hardly above 80%. Interesting that this site rates the movie lower than Boxofficemojo and imdb.
Tough room.

Seriously, I'll bet there are far more TOS loyalists here than on the more mainstream sites. Oh well, it's not like they're ever going to get whatever it is that they wanted to get.
