What went wrong? The inconsistent writing, the introduction of new characters without any true backgrounds or fleshing the existing ones.. we could go on and on about what went wrong. Such a promising show meeting such a stupid fate.

Sylar should have worn a hat.

Inconsistent writing.
Twisted continuity.
Adding too much new characters and killing some of those who have the most potential (Adam, Elle, etc.)
Failure of having no main arc to the series though claiming to have one by how the series started with calling the first season the first volume in an epic story.
No sense of a conclusion to the series.
Weak romances with only a handful that have great potential only to be extinguished before it could go the distance.

and they wonder why JAY LENO, even with his light-weight show, is replacing shows like this...

Re: HEROES..what went wrong?

Season 1 of heroes sucked me in because it was a giant origin story. At the end of it i was pretty excited that the characters had finally come together . I had hopes that the show would take the characters in the direction of actually having them help people/fight evil etc..

However season 2 was just another origin story but with irish people. I have season 2 on dvd but for the life of me cannot remember how it ended. I didn't even bother with season 3. I really think the show should have gone down the 'superhero team path', the fact that it didn't was incredibly disappointing.

Sylar did wear a couple of black hats, but maybe a cowboy hat or some space goggles or something.

He should have been proactive, and into recycling.
