A buttload of sensors would make this a science vessel... Along with another buttload of labs... Cargo space for assorted specimens... A tractor beam, transporters and specialized shuttles (for collecting assorted specimens)...

Re: USS DRAKE - My own design!
I like your second version, but would you be willing to make the nacelle supports a little more robust? I've always been a big fan of the idea that the technology in Star Trek allows for structures like the support pylons and neck to be deceptively fragile looking, but in reality, are quite the opposite. But in some cases, simply from a fan design point of view, some things just look like they don't work (to me)... In this case, I'd like to see something a little more substantial connecting the nacelles to your design. I think they connect in an odd place on the nacelles- perhaps flipping them, and moving them back just a wee bit...

Re: USS DRAKE - My own design!
My advice... it depends on what sort of "sensor" you're talking about. There are two sorts of detecting technologies... "sensors" and "scanners." A sensor is passive. Think of this like an infrared camera for detecting radiant heat. Or a radio antenna. Or a thermometer. A scanner puts out energy and then uses a sensor to analyze the "bounced" energy. This is like a radar system, or a sonar system, or an IR "night vision" camera with integrated IR source. Basically... "sensor" = "passive" and "scanner" = "active." A scanner "reaches out and touches" the object being analyzed, while a sensor just "looks" at it. Now, think of your "sensor platform" that way. What is it? Is it a big pallet with many small devices? Is it a single large device? It's all sort of open to interpretation... but you should think about what your device is trying to accomplish. |
