Whoever came up with this idea should go back and watch what the Kuzuis came up with the last time they tried to do a Buffy movie.
It does remind me of Kevin McClory's endless attempts to remake Thunderball.
Or Dean Devlin still, after 12 years, trying to make his original vision for a Stargate sequel that completely ignores the TV series.

It saddens me that nobody involved with the show became movie stars. James Marsters has only done TV guest spots and Dragonball. Angel (can't spell his last name) and Alyson Hannigan are TV regulars on modestly successful TV shows.

[...]I really expected Hannigan to blossom into a beloved movie actress. I was disappointed that after her brief time in the spotlight in the "American Pie" series, all she did was (ugh) "Date Movie".

I can't believe Sarah Michelle Gellar hasn't been in anything really good since 1999. It looks like the only movies she was in that were half decent were "Scream 2" and "Cruel Intentions"...but they weren't exactly masterpieces and she only had a cameo in the former. It's like the cast and crew of the show have the same curse that seems to follow most Star Trek actors after their Star Trek career ends.
Well, Michelle Tractenberg has had some film success with movies like Euro Trip & Ice Princess.

And while most of the actors haven't become huge stars, they do seem to be working steady, often getting regular TV gigs. Nicholas Brendan was a regular on Kitchen Confidential. Alyson Hannigan is on How I Met Your Mother. Charisma Carpenter had a recurring role on Veronica Mars. Anthony Stewart Head was a regular on Manchild in the U.K. David Boreanaz is the co-lead on Bones, a very solid success on FOX. Seth Green has, of course, gone on to all kinds of crazy stuff, like Family Guy, Greg the Bunny, & Robot Chicken. James Marsters played recurring baddies on Smallville & Torchwood. J. August Richards was a regular on Conviction. Amy Acker had some recurring roles on Alias & Dollhouse. Vincent Kartheiser is a regular on Mad Men. I'd certainly say they have a better track record than most former Star Trek actors (with the big exceptions of William Shatner & Patrick Stewart).
And let's not forget Amber Benson's guest shots on Cold Case, The Inside and Private Practice, as well as starring roles in the Lifetime movies Holiday Wishes and 7 Things to Do Before I'm Thirty, and her roles in indie films like Strictly Sexual and One-Eyed Monster.

I also noticed she had a new novel out called Death's Daughter at our local bookstore. (Newish - looks like it was published this year anyway)

Yeah, I just picked it up, I think it only just came out in the last few weeks.

I'm not against they idea entirely. Gene Rodenberry was involved in Star Trek: The Motion Picture but most people will tell you they like Wrath of Khan better. I'm a Whedon fan, but I don't want to be so close minded to say a good Buffy movie could not be made without Whedon.

They should wait another ten years, and then at least get someone who will Joss would give his blessing, to smooth the transition like Abrams recently did with Nimoy. Right now its basically the guys who gave us the original mediocre film wanting to move ahead with no real tangible artistic vision as of yet. Their pitch so far is weak: A new version not featuring the characters that made like the concept in the first place. Not exactly promising.

So far I'm not liking this idea. But maybe they'll surprise us with a good script, a great cast and an acceptable movie.

But I'm not holding my breath.

Re: Buffy the Vampire Slayer Remake... Without Joss

Anthony "Giles" Head's views on the news
Doing a Buffy movie without Whedon? “I wouldn’t want to see it, no,” Head admits. “The Kuzuis didn’t do a great job on the movie the first time around. It was Joss’ script at the age of 19, but they changed a lot of it. They said, ‘Look, we know best and we know how to make this movie,’ and it became quite schlocky and high camp.” Head recalls the time when he went to audition for the Buffy series because he loved Whedon’s pilot script so much, and his agent advised him to watch the movie to get the tone of the show before his screen test. “So I did and I went, ‘Oh, that’s not it at all.’ I went in and saw Joss and said, ‘I watched the movie last night!’ And he went, ‘Oh. Did ya?’ I just put it out of my mind. The bottom line is if a movie was ever to be made, it should be made with Joss Whedon, whether it’s a retrospective or not. But it would be madness to do it without him. [The Kuzuis] have the rights to because they have the rights to the original movie, but it should be interesting to see. It may be a bit like watching a car wreck.”
Hearing of this last week finally made me get round to buying Christophe Beck's score soundtrack to the show. Some awesome tunes on there, really bring back some great memories of the show.
A lot of the tracks are fairly short though, and therefore it doesn't work as well to listen to as perhaps the Angel score CD. But there are some great ones on there, especially Faith's End from the Buffy-Faith fight in Graduation Day pt.1

Buffy: "Seriously, with the talking to me? Not exactly getting the why."
I'm just go ahead and say that this quote is the best one so far.

That said, I kind of just want them to remake Buffy using the Star Trek script, because all these quotes make entirely too much sense.
Buffy- I might throw up on you.........

Mrs Summers- Buffy, you have to see this

cue wide shot of the Summer's new home

Buffy: [about Oz]: "Who was that pointy-eared bastard?"
Willow: "I don't know, but I like him."

Xander: "I like this school, it's exciting!"

Buffy: "So what type of combat training do you have?"
Willow: "magic."

Buffy: "I've never dusted three vampires from two coffins with one stake before!"

Oh my God, that sucks. That really sucks. If you guys thought the Abrams bashing on the Trek XI forums was bad, this film (if it happens) will practically make the Internet blow up!

No Joss, no Buffy, as far as I'm concerned.

Why can't Hollywood come up with something new? I'm sick of them dusting off an old property (especially one as classic and well-loved as BTVS) and mucking it up in a new reboot.

I love Joss' work so far, and seriously, if he is not involved, this project is totally doomed. Especially giving it back to the person who wrecked the original film in the first place.

I hate Hollywood.

It'd be hilarious if Joss made an "Army of Slayers" movie to be released in tandem, and it totally destroyed this one at the box office....

Joss should buy the rights to the character to avoid a mess like this from even being considered.

Personally, I can't wait to see the annoucement and premiere of this third-rate hollywood movie starring Miley Cyrus as Buffy, the reaction from the hordes of Whedon worshippers blasting the intarwebs with fan outrage and hysteria will be priceless!
