I believe that it should end on a WTF, "is this because i'm gay" note

Re: How should "Law & Order" end?

I think this should end with Jack McCoy being arrested for corruption and malfeasance in office. As many of the ex-regulars as possible testify to what a great guy he's been(cue flashbacks) while the current ADA and detectives scramble to prove it's a frame-up. Fade to black as the jury is about to announce their decision....

Stop. Right. There. Unlike so many other major dramas of its era and later, L&O isn't about stunts and couples and tearjerking, it's all about the business of solving crimes. It should just end with a solid regular episode.
Agreed. L&O is a show in the vein of the episodic dramas of decades past, and those almost never had any kind of finale. There's no arc to the series; hell, it's practically an anthology with essentially interchangeable characters. It should end in a way that's true to itself: another case, another trial, another day on the job.
I don't think there's any real question it would end any other way, but it's always fun to speculate.

Fade to black...one last "dun dun". That's it.

They should go out with a bang and finally abolish crime in New York.
Or go the other way and turn the entire island of Manhattan into a maximum security prison.

OR

The People grow tired of "two separate yet equally important groups." In spite of spirited protests by Jack McCoy & Lt. VanBuren, they watch in horror as New York City is transformed into Megacity1 and its chief law enforcer becomes... Judge Dredd!

At least then, it will have broken Gunsmoke's record.
WWE Monday Night Raw already broke that.

Yeah, but the record is for a fictional series...

Uhh...

Okay, I'll give you that one.

How do you figure? WWE Raw premiered in 1993, three years after L&O did.

Raw doesn't have seasons. It runs 52 weeks a year with only the occasional break for Christmas. They broadcast their 828th episode on Monday.

As for Christopher's comment - there is no pretense that WWE Raw is anything other than scripted entertainment. The only episodes I can think of that weren't scripted were the Owen Hart, Eddie Guerrero and Chris Benoit (yes, I know) tribute episodes as the performers just threw together shows as best they could and most of the time was spent on them paying tribute to their lost friends.

In fact, it wasn't even Gunsmoke's record - another wrestling show, Georgia Championship Wrestling, ran for even longer than Gunsmoke, but Raw has broken that record too.

That still works out to only about 15 years. Remember, I'm not talking about the number of episodes or anything like that. I'm only referring to *how long it's been on the air*.

Fair enough, typically when I've heard people talk about Gunsmoke it's been the number of episodes they were talking about.
