I take it the "Captain for 12 minutes" means Daddy Kirk died in service.

Apparently he saves those 800 people and dies as the Kelvin explodes after getting hit from those Narada missiles..

I think Capt. Robau lets all his officers be "Captain for 12 Minutes"; whoever saves the most lives during that 12 minutes gets to be First Officer.

Or maybe not.

Nothing canon. But even in the novels he was supposed to be deceased by the time of TOS and the related movies.

Captain Robau felt it was time for George Kirk to man up. So when 800 lives were in danger Robau said "George, save those people. You have 12 minutes."

The Kelvin carried 800 people? Yikes. Must be a lot bigger than we thought. The 1701-D carried only a little over one thousand, and it doesn't even exist for another 130-odd years.

The Kelvin looks pretty small, smaller than the Constitution class, but has double its crew.
