humans did not come from Earth. Everyone came from Kobol
That has not been firmly established.
I have a really hard time believing everyone came from Kobol rather than Earth. Not with all the anthropological record we have of man evolving on Earth. It just wouldn't make any sense to me if they were to say man came from Kobol and for some reason lost or abandoned his technology. How would that explain the neanderthals and the many stages of man? How would it explain the little similarities like the neckties and suits?

Well, here in Texas we have ways of creatively explaining that kind of stuff away.

Two trains of thought on this right now:

1.) The "Earth" we saw wasn't our Earth, and they will discover a planet, and call it Earth, and that will be our Earth

2.) The "Earth' we saw was our planet, and we are thousands of years in the future
Except you are forgetting that when they first showed "Earth", we saw the landmasses, and they were exactly as they are on our Earth. You could easily make out North America, for example. So it has to be 2.
If you subscribe to the theory that there are infinite numbers of parallel universes, in which every possible iteration of history that could happen DOES happen in one of them, then an Earth with a North American shaped continent could develop in a multitude of different realities. BSG is in one of them, where humans evolved on Kobol and colonized a planet with a continent that shape but not in our own reality, where humans evolved on the same planet with a continent that shape.

There's still the problem of the 12 Colonies original flags. Why in the galaxy would they only have star patterns visible from EARTH? (The same patterns that confirmed they had reached Earth) It's been implied the 12 never went TO Earth, so what gives, if they were never ever there? You don't put a star pattern on your Flag if it has no significance to you.
Yes, thank you. I don't think this has really been explained yet. If everyone did start on Kobol, and then during the exodus, 12 went to the colonies, 1 went to Earth, then how would the 12 know of the 1's constellations? The only way for them to know is for Earth to be the originating spot.

Assuming RDM is going for a logical and real world explanation here, then I think it all comes back to the Song. 'All Along the Watchtower' wasn't written by Anders. It was written by Bob Dylan!

Anything else is libel.

Someone must've included AATW in the programming of the original Cylons on Kobol. And this means Kobol was not really the birthplace of mankind - rather it was some distant colony of OUR Earth. Thousands of years in the future. There's also the possibility that the "colony" of the 13th Tribe is in fact our Earth, and that the 13th tribe were subliminally drawn back there because it was the birthplace of their original programmers.

This explains the map on Kobol, too. Whoever programmed the Kobol Cylons knew that whereever they settled, they would look up into the sky and look for constellations that looked like the old constellations from Earth. The planet in SAGN shared some of those patterns, but not necessarily all of them..

Of course, all of this is assuming that RDM is going for a logical and real-world explanation, which he might not be. But this one works for now.
This is bigger than us. This is life.
