Friday the 13th - Movie(remake) discussion, grading and SPOILERS

Last night I attended a free screener of the remake of Friday the 13th.



Mods I put this here cause I see it as "media" and not "sci-fi" but move if if necessary of course.

My grade: A

This film is one that I loved as teen growing up in the 80's/90's. I liked most all of the blantly commercialized theme horror franchises. So much so that to this day I have avoided watching the Rob Zombie Halloween remake. Why? The original was perfect and needed no updating. The shot for shot remake of Psycho, not needed. To date and prior to Friday the 13ths remake only Texas Chainsaw Massacre was tolerable. The visuals needed an update and the story was still good in the remake but it still didn't capture that same magic.

What they did with Friday the 13th was take the paper thin plot points that are there, not only in the first film but the first 3 films, and make one really good movie. Its tighter and flows better cause the story is more prevalent. They also take the iconongraphy and visuals of those first three films and fit them into this one as well.

Jason's mom is seen as a killer on film to honor the first film.
Jason in a burlap bag as a killer is seen.
Jason doesn't get his iconic hockey mask till the end of the first act about 40 min into the film.

Having essentially taken the first 3 films and made this one into a good film I can only wonder if additional sequels will become as hollow and shallow as the sequels of old. Guess we shall see cause I suspect this will do well if the energy in my screener is any indication.

I haven't seen this yet, however, I like this idea that this film is a remake of the first three films, rather than just one. I'll probably see this now. Thanks.

I would love to know the budget for this thing. I can't seem to find that info anywhere.

^ IMDB estimates it's at $16 million. Horror movies and porn are the two genres that people say sell themselves. You don't need to pay a big name actor $15 million to be in a horror movie to get people to see it. And since this is a remake, the name of the movie is the big selling point.

We are finishing up on the Unrated DVD this week. That DVD will rock! We have a different cut of movie, that not only has more violence and sex, but it has an additional storyline that is totally different from the movie you will see in theaters. Its not like we just cut a few things differently, the DVD version will feel like a different movie. For those of you who love the theatrical cut, that will also be on the DVD also.

I enjoy horror films but I've haven't seen any of the originals for this franchise. The fact its the same director as the lame Texas Chain Saw Massacre remake almost puts me off, but I might give it a shot

Not sure why the breast count became a bigger F:13th element than other slasher flicks but this one does have a good count. If that is an element you are looking for the following ladies are on full display from the waist up at some point in the movie.

The originals aren't anything to write home about. Paramount pumped out eight really cheap movies in 10 years. That should say it all.

Just think of it as your typical mongoloid boy becomes man becomes zombie becomes body-possessing slug becomes cyborg movie.

Which is why it took combining the first 3 to get enough plot for one movie in this remake to further comment on the sheer mindlessness of the originals.

Minor quibble...if he gets the mask around 40 mins. in, that wouldn't be the end of the 1st act. It'd be the pinch in the 2nd.

Nana Visitor as Mrs. Voorhees? Damn, that's awesome.

I'll probably still wait for DVD to see this, though. I don't usually see horror films in the theater.

You know, this would never happen (at least on the big screen), but what if they had a Justice League/Avengers/League of Extraordinary Gentlemen... but with horror villains? What if there was something so bad out there that Freddy Kreuger, Jason Vorhees, Michael Myers, Pinhead, Candyman, Leatherface and whoever else were brought to try and stop it? Granted, since only half of them even speak, there might not be much in the way of dialog.
