Re: Alias...is the show any good?

Alias is quite possibly the best example of a series that suffered due to network interference. Alias was a show ahead of its time. It was smart, complex, heavily-serialized... but when it aired, networks hadn't embraced these qualities yet. ABC wanted a ratings hit, so they kept asking the producers to make it "more accessible" to viewers (aka "dumb it down"). There were creative decisions that were made because the network demanded it, and it had a negative impact on the series. A lot of story threads do not get the attention they should.

The first two seasons are absolutely amazing. Things definitely change in season 3, though I still found it entertaining and good enough. Season 4 gets off on the wrong foot, and spends a good chunk of time going nowhere, before finally coming together in to a sloppy and rushed climax. Season 5 was more consistent storywise, IMO, and has some great moments, but there are just too many cast changes for my liking.

If you're interested in Alias, I highly recommend checking it out. Even with the decline in quality, I always found the show to be entertaining.

I have to chip in and add my yes, yes, and thrice yes!

It's a bit tongue in cheek, don't watch it if you want plausible storylines! It's a FUN show.

Seasons one and two are of course the best.
Season three isn't bad.
Season four is horrible, I hate it... eugh.
Season five I loved again, it brought back the absurd fun of Alias.

Watch Alias! I also found it has a really high rewatch value, having seen most of it about four times. And strangely I feel I could watch it again now. Not sure what it is about that show...

Oh, and just shout at the dump-as-a-brick Vaughn when you watch it. God I hate him.

Re: Alias...is the show any good?

Count me in as a big fan of Alias.

Season 1 = fantastic
Season 2 = really good
Season 3 = pretty good
Season 4 = okay
Season 5 = much better, but ain't the Alias I loved

I will say, however, that Alias in widescreen on DVD is very cinematic, and the show had a great look. I bought seasons 1-4 on DVD, but didn't have any interest in doing so for Season 5, which I was happy to re-watch once on TV. I've been thinking about pulling out the ol' DVDs again as well...

Re: Alias...is the show any good?

I'll echo what everybody said before me, Season 1 and Season 2 are landmarks in recent televisual history. Even though quality declined (and what the fuck did they do with Alvin Sloane of its five year run? ) Alias still gave us Julian Sark (portrayed by David Anders).

I LOVED the first two seasons.
I struggled to care in season 3, and stopped during season four, and I never looked back.

I was actually pretty mad--it was such a great show and it just...fell apart quickly.

Not as quickly as Heroes mind you, but that's a different thread.

I enjoyed it. There were some drops in quality, but overall, I thought it was great

The JJ cult will tell you its wonderful but I say overall its a poor show. It looked interesting enough to me in season one, there was a good plot and some good chemistry between actors but it quickly fails and turns into a fashionable drama. Time jumps with Sydney waking up after a 24 month snoozefest, who's sleeping with who, shock antics from 'Lost' and pointless plot twists and that sort of thing. Most of the time the series is nothing more than a Fashion performance from Jennifer Garner masquerading as a scifi/thriller

QFT, I too lost all interest half way thru season 2. Just too much unexplained shifting thru time and plot.

Re: Alias...is the show any good?

The first 2 seasons were great because the writers spent a great deal of time creating this intricate mystery and subplot. But that's how all JJ Abrams TV shows start off.

But then at some point, you have to start answering some questions or else people will either lose interest because of boredom or of frustation.

I think that's what happened with Alias. When JJ Abrams left the show to work on other projects, the writers didn't do a good job of creating a great answer to the mystery. Instead it just dragged on which ultimately hurt the show. Luckily Abrams AND ABC realized this before it was too late and decided to cancel the show but not before giving ample time to wrap things up in some logical fashion.

LOST suffered from this too I think, but Abrams learned his lesson. That's why they've already annouced that LOST will only last up to 5 seasons I think and more importantly, Abrams and the crew already have the ending in the mind.

^^
Lost is running six seasons; we just started the fifth.

My understanding on what happened to ALIAS was the execs didn't like the serialized nature of the show and in-depth storyline of Rambaldi hints. That's why every new year brought more standalones and less serialized Rambaldi mystery. That's why the entire series was rebooted in the Super Bowl episode, because they felt her double agent status was too confusing to viewers. I'm not sure but I imagine that's why they rebooted AGAIN with S3. That's why the first half of S4 (as I recall) had no running story at all.
