Re: 2009 Oscar Nominations

Lots of nice surprises on that list, like Richard Jenkins and Melissa Leo. I was hoping Sally Hawkins would be nominated for Happy-Go-Lucky, though.

I really wasn't expecting a Best Picture nod for The Dark Knight.

The Reader? I only saw previews for that movie - was it really that good? it's waaay behind the other films (and TDK) in terms of reviews at metacritic or rottentomatoes

Lame that The Dark Knight didn't get a nomination, but completely expected.

Robert Downey Jr. for Tropic Thunder! That's the greatest nomination the Oscars have ever made! I love Ledgers performance, but I hope RDJ wins, as the nomination and performance is more courageous than Ledgers.

Way to go, RDJ!

Ron Howard for best director? Frost/Nixon was so dry as a film it made me wish that they just filmed a performance of the play.

The best picture list seems utterly boring this year.

And Mickey Rourke and Marisa Tomei (previous winner, but a brunt of jokes ever since) in acting noms...hmmm.

They need a best "cameo" award.

This one I find strange, I thought his perfomance was weak, especially compared to his colleagues on the film. But I was unimpressed with the movie in general, and don't understand why it got so many nominations.

Go Milk!

As usual a list populated with arty 'high-brow' films, and too snobby to include TDK for Best Picture.

btw. Waltz with Bashir has got to get the Oscar for best foreign-language movie, I don't know all the other candidates, but this one is a phantastic movie!

Re: 2009 Oscar Nominations

This is a very difficult Oscars to predict. Reason being that this was a fairly lackluster year for films, and almost everything on the nominees list was good but not great. Of the nominees for best picture, the only one I feel is deserving is Slumdog Millionaire. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and Frost/Nixon didn't even deserve nominations. I hate to sound like a fan boy (becuase I do fancy myself a film aficionado, and make it a point to see all those movies that may be nominated) but the best picture I saw all year really was The Dark Knight. It's sad to see that the Academy is still unable to overcome its prejudices against genre pictures.

Yes, the academy does harbor some prejudices toward genre films, but I really think The Dark Knight's greatness has been overstated and that it doesn't deserve a best picture nomination. It was a very fun, well made film, but not a great film. I truly do not believe that it will be a movie that will be as highly regarded in even 10 years time.

I hope so, but I'm afraid it'll go to Sean Penn of Milk. Penn's win will be a political statement.

Maybe the Academy simply didn't like The Dark Knight? There's a big difference between the average moviegoer and film critics.
