Whats sadder is I bet most fans don't even know who he is.

Re: RIP - 4E

I am honored to say that I had the privilage of meeting Forry on several occasions. The most recent was this summer, and his health had clearly gone downhill. However, even with that, his humor and good spirits (no pun intended) were evident. Forry was the kind of man that I would like to be. I don't think there is a person alive who met him who didn't take a piece of him back with them. He was a generous, kind-hearted man.

I'm also lucky that I know the young man who had been living in his house for a number of years and taking care of him. So my information about the man is accurate.
Forry had just celebrated his 92nd birthday. His health recently had taken a turn for the worse, but he seemed to have a very draastic recovery. I think everyone knew that time was short, though.

Not enough good can be said about this true gentleman. As he described others, I can say about him. Underneith it all, he was Santa Claus.

The stars will shine a little less brightly from now on.

I've felt that about a few people who have had threads posted here notifying us of their passing. I think it's only natural that time marches on and new fans may not be as familair, or familiar at all, with folks from the "past". It saddens me, but I've learned to live with it.

What do you mean no thread? It's here on the same page, posted yesterday. http://www.trekbbs.com/showthread.php?t=76008
I thought some might miss it because of the title (or we'd get stupid comments like the one about the comic strip).

I'll append his name to the title to the thread.

That was my fault. I was taking a quick run through the forum when I saw the two threads. I meant to change the thread title, for the same reason, and just forgot to on my way out.

I thought my comment was witty, thank you very much.

Forrest J Ackerman: 1916-2008

Apologies if this has already been posted:

Forrest J Ackerman, the sometime actor, literary agent, magazine editor and full-time bon vivant who discovered author Ray Bradbury and was widely credited with coining the term "sci-fi," has died. He was 92. Mr. Ackerman died Thursday of heart failure at his Los Angeles home, said Kevin Burns, head of Prometheus Entertainment and a trustee of Mr. Ackerman's estate.
Although only marginally known to readers of mainstream literature, Mr. Ackerman was legendary in science-fiction circles as the founding editor of the pulp magazine Famous Monsters of Filmland. He was also the owner of a huge private collection of science-fiction movie and literary memorabilia that for years filled every nook and cranny of a hillside mansion overlooking Los Angeles.
"He became the Pied Piper, the spiritual leader, of everything science fiction, fantasy and horror," Mr. Burns said.

Re: RIP - 4E (Forrest J. Ackerman)

This is not unexpected, but very sad. Imagine everything that was in this guy's head: All the people, the experiences, the history, the stories, the movies-- a whole universe in there. He left a lot behind for us, but the essence of it all is gone. He was a one-of-a-kind person who led a one-of-a-kind life. There will never be another.

I think it was last year, or maybe the year before, that I heard him interviewed by Chase Masterson on an Internet Radio Program; it was so heartwarming to hear his pleasant reminiscences, yet so sad to hear him sound so old.

RIP, Forry.

Considerng how badly his health was failing, I'm almost glad he's finally passed on. For his sake. Forry was uniquely wonderful, and the world is more than a little darker without him, now.

I thought the exact same thing.

It still kinda freaks me out that there are people who post on here who were born after I moved into my first house. That feels like yesterday and those people shouldn't be old enough to string a sentence together.

Actually, judging by some of the comments here, that makes a lot of sense.

I can remember reading about Forrest in mainstream publications like People and TV Guide back when nothing in scifi ever got mentioned. A legend has passed....
