Who knows? You are looking for an answer that nobody here can give.

Those are rhetorical questions - I'm actually saying what would have to happen for a cadet to be placed in command of a ship.

I'm thinking there is a span of a few years between his graduating from being a cadet to the time we see him on the ship wearing his black shirt.

I know the Entertainment Weekly article said "[black is the] color of space cadets in Abrams' trekverse", but I'm not putting that much stock into that comment in the article. I'm thinking that black may be the color of Academy Instructors (we know Kirk was one) or post-graduate Academy Command school.
If the trailer breakdown over at Trekmovie is to be believed, Entertainment Weekly is right about Kirk's shirt meaning he's a cadet.
Thanks...I just checked that out.

I STILL think Kirk has to be in some sort of Command School or something (hence he is "technically" a cadet)...I don't know. I'm just talking out my ass now.

If he IS truly a cadet, I hope there is a damn good reason for him to be taking temporary command of a ship full of senior officers.

I know trekmovie.com usually does their due diligence, but maybe they are simply speculating about this (and some other details) just like the rest of us.

I did notice that he is wearing gold when he says "Buckle up", so maybe he DOESN'T take command while in the "cadet" black shirt. Perhaps I made a wrong assumption and he only takes command later (when he is no longer a cadet).

Depends on the Cadet.

Captain Leon Grabowsky has a very similar distinction as the youngest commanding officer of a U.S. Navy destroyer during World War II. He graduated from the US Naval Academy in 1941 and assumed command of the destroyer Leutze in 1944. He the commanding officer was seriously wounded, he took command and was promoted to captain.

To me its looking more and more likely that JJ Abrams is going to completely wipe out Kirk's history aboard the USS Farragut. Kirk himself said his first commanding officer was Captain Garrovick. I keep thinking in this movie his first commanding officer is Captain Pike.

What if Star Fleet Academy trained whole crews and assigned them to starships? You see one picture with McCoy sitting next to Kirk (both wearing red), but then skip to another picture on the bridge where Kirk is only wearing black, but McCoy is in uniform as a lieutenant commander. Postings onboard a starship would be determined by academy scores and performance.

How desperate would any incarnation of Starfleet have to be to institute that kind of training regimen?

Or is desperation not an issue, but other factors are?

Re: So Cadet to Captain in what... a week?!

I remember reading somewhere that either JJ or the writers said that this movie would take place from the crew's childhoods up to a point right before the 5 year mission starts, so i imagine that the story jumps around quite abit. It probably takes place over many years. I think everybody is assuming that after Kirk gets into space the movie slows to "real time". Why would that be true? It could completely go from cadet to command and give only a mention of the faragut, Pikes promotion to fleet captain,Spocks (however many) years under pike before Kirk came along, ect... . The point is, we won't know until May 8 2009.

What if Pike helps Kirk somehow to pass so quickly trough starfleet and eventually take command of the Ent , from the spoilers i'm getting a sense that Pike wants to be Jim's "sponsor"

Hey why not, it worked for DS9's "Valiant" and look how they turned- oh.

I put this compilation together based on how I interpret the progression of events.

I only includes shots where you could actually see his face. Obviously there are moments in the trailer where you see him but not clearly.

Followed by the shot of him driving the car off the cliff.

Interesting - shot 6 is clearly reversed; his injuries, including the spot on his forehead, have swapped sides.

I like what you've done here. But you forgot Kirk as a child.
