New Casting Confirmed

The role of Caesar has been cast and will be played by Saïd Taghmaoui. Here is his IMDB Profile. Also mentioned in EW's article is that will be seeing Frank Lapidus again

Hungry for an appetizer of Lost scoop as you impatiently starve for the start of season 5, which bows in early ’09? Then feast on this: Executive producers Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof tell EW they’ve just completed casting of two major new characters joining their saga next year. Last week, Michael Ausiello reported the addition of New Amsterdam alum Zuleikha Robinson. This week, we’d like to introduce you to Saïd Taghmaoui, a French thesp most recently seen in the Don Cheadle thriller Traitor. He’ll play Caesar, a mystery man who... um... well, that’s all we got. But the producers say the actor’s skill set fits the part. “He has an innate intelligence, intensity, and danger we really responded to,” says Lindelof, who declined to specify whether Caesar is good or bad, though he did tease that the character will be playing “an important part of the setup for the final act of the show in season 6." He also confirms that Robinson’s Ilana is associated with Caesar, and Cuse likens her to Heath Ledger’s Joker in The Dark Knight. “There was something very unsettling about the way the Joker kept telling different stories about his background -- something very similar to what we had planned for Ilana,” he says.

Look for a delayed introduction for the duo, beginning with an intriguing set-up followed by a gradual increase in screen time that won't detract from established faves, much like how season 4’s newbies, the Freighter Folk (Jeremy Davies, Rebecca Mader, Ken Leung, Jeff Fahey), were worked into the mix. (The producers say we’ll be seeing more of the FF next year, too — even Fahey, last seen escaping the Island with the Oceanic 6).

FYI: Zuleikha rhymes with You-Like-A, while Saïd sounds just like Lost’s own Sayid. In fact, Taghmaoui also played — get this — the Iraqi soldier who tortured Mark Wahlberg in Three Kings. Should theorists be looking for hidden meaning in this seemingly coincidental linkage? “No,” says Lindelof. “Just... no.” Oh, okay. But how about the theory that Smokey is... [Click] Hello? Hello?!

Q: How was your character on Lost, Matthew Abbadon, explained to you?

A: I was told he was kind of like Darth Vader. That was about as much as I was told. And that really told me more about where he sits in the power structure of this other organization. I've done three episodes of Lost, and in each, I'm in a different time, and my character is different. The truth is with Matthew Abbadon and that whole organization that I'm a part of, I'm not even willing to place bets on whether I'm good or bad. Here's what I'm clear on: I believe in what I'm doing, I'm a master of surreptition, and when it comes to getting things done, I can be calculatingly ruthless.

Filming Update - Simon's Butcher Shop to Appear

Hey All,
Here is an interesting tidbit. apparently the Hoffs/Drawler Funeral home is going to be used again in Season 5, but it is setup for Simon's Butcher Shop!!

Simon's Butcher shop you ask? Well if you remember back to Charlie's dream sequence in Fire + Water he sees his father Simon as a butcher in their home.

So is it possible that this is Charlie's father's shop?? Are we going to get more of Charlie's story?? Is it a Hurley and Ghost Charlie related scene...or a random shop!?

What do you all think??

From Hawaii comes word that Hoffs/Drawler has been redressed as "Simon's Butcher Shop." Yes, that is Simon as in Simon Pace. Could this mean we'll be seeing Charlie era flashbacks early on in season 5? Time will tell.

Petra in Yakima, Wash.: Can you tell me any more about the nature of Ben's plan on Lost?

That's just what I asked Evangeline Lilly yesterday at the Emmys, and she told me, "Hmmm? Is Ben's plan's coming together? Is Ben's plan comprehensible is the question? Can anyone make sense of Benjamin Linus?" Ah, sounds like a classic Lost brainteaser! I also ran into Michael Emerson at the HBO party (he and his wife Carrie Preston are an adorable couple BTW) and asked him how Ben was going to get everyone to go along, and he said, "Oh, it's not a question of why they should go along, it's a question of do they want to survive." In the words of the great thinker Shaggy: Zoinks!

Speaking of tight sets on lock down -- like that transition? -- Jorge Garcia broke the radio silence and gave me some Lost scoop: "I've read up to script four at this point. But script one blew my mind. It's really, really crazy. It starts right where we left off. Hurley is right where Sayid picked him up in the mental institution. We see what happens to the island in that first episode and it's pretty insane. I was just like, wait a minute, what was that again? I'm still just trying to wrap my head around it." Jorge said getting the Oceanic 6 back to the island is a major theme this year, but he's more curious about how the whole power struggle between Widmore and Ben Linus is going to pan out: "There was some really cool stuff that came out in this last episode [four]. Actually, there's a great reveal in the third one too. Two was pretty fun, but there's something in the fourth that's really cool. Also, I get to wear something in episode four that I'm very excited about."

As for changes to the show in season five, Jorge said it's tricky to categorize the episodes as 'anybody centric': "It's not as clear cut as it's been in the past. We don't have the moments where someone stares off into space and then we cut to something that happened in their previous life. They've gone in a slightly different direction as far as how they're telling the story and they're definitely trying to show what's going on with more people in every given episode."

Evangeline Lilly, who was running around the carpet looking for her girlfriends, Elizabeth Mitchell and Yunjin Kim, agreed: "It's a whole new format. And all the original characters are revolutionized, so what you're used to watching in Kate, Jack, Sawyer, Hurley, Sayid, and even Sun who's been steady since season one, is [out the window]. We're all brand new people. It's very exciting to sort of act a new character and not the same thing over and over again."

Unfortunately for Michael Emerson -- who walked the carpet with wife Carrie Preston, whom you may recognize from True Blood -- he hasn't been doing much acting at all as of late: "I honestly haven't worked that much so far [in the first four episodes]. You won't see a lot of me early on [in the season]. I think they're saving up something terrible for me to do here pretty soon." On the subject of what we can expect, Michael said that while getting back to the island seems to be one of the plot lines, they're still not sure why they have to do that. But they are determined nonetheless. He also said he is surprised by the amazing amount of mobility in season five: "We're all over the place. It's a real ride now. You know, every season, Lost ramps it up a notch, they always add some new device, some new convention. And I think, as time goes by, the show gets a little more fragmented, a little more of a puzzle." Oh, perfect...

At the Entertainment Weekly/Revlon pre-Emmy party in Beverly Hills, Daniel Dae Kim spilled a little tidbit about the "very bad things" that supposedly happened to the Left Behinds after the Oceanic Six were rescued: "There are definitely consequences to moving the Island. There are some that will pay a heavy price. Some people will suffer physically, some will suffer psychologically..." And at the HBO Luxury Lounge at the Four Seasons Hotel, Jorge Garcia dished that when he got the first scripts for season five he was "shocked" and that Hurley has some big changes in store this season...

The finale of season four ripped several couples apart. Is the Island the love of Ben's life that he's been kept apart from? Is he sentimental like that?
He sure doesn't seem to be a very sentimental character, but you're right—Ben is separated from everything he loves. He's lost what was even passing for family, so now he really is, sort of, cut loose. He is adrift.

Is he a man with nothing left to lose?
He has less to lose, but I think...He can afford to be a little more mobile, and possibly more ruthless now, but there is a lot to lose. The fight he's fighting, the enemy that he is withstanding is a formidable one, and so much hangs in the balance.

You say withstanding, which calls to mind a siege. Would you say the Island or its protectors are under siege?
On some days, there is that quality about it. [Laughs.]

One of the biggest debates that came out of the finale was: "What did Ben mean when he said everyone has to go back?" Do you have any sense of what the rules are for the assertion that everyone has to go back?
My sense is that those who escaped must go back.

Is that a mandate from Ben or from the Island's life force, such as we understand it, which is not very well?
I think it's a scientific condition of the mechanism by which the Island operates. I don't think it's an esoteric or spiritual issue, I think it's science. I think more and more, now, the show has scientific answers.

In the episode "The Shape of Things to Come," Ben said Locke needed to survive the assault on the Island, and lo and behold, that seems to have been true. Does this mean that Ben and Locke are truly allies at this point?
I think, yes—however unhappily—they are allies.

Is it the connection to the Island that they have in common?
That, and...John Locke has a condition or quality that sets him apart from all other Lostaways. John Locke is special...er. He is more special than the others.

That must be fun for you and Terry O'Quinn to play. You've always said you enjoy working together.
We always have, but we haven't been working together so far this season.

They're in different places.

Who have you been working with primarily this season—the Oceanic Six?
I've been working with characters who are not on the Island.

And up until this season, there's always been the concept of what the fans call "centric" episodes—the Jack-centric and Ben-centric episodes and so on. Are those a thing of the past as far as the show structure is concerned?
No...but I think the cast of "centric" characters is growing.

Interesting. And speaking of Ben-centric episodes, there's still a lot of missing time in his story, him versus Widmore, for example, and why they hate each other so much. Do you think we'll get to that this season, or is that something that belongs in the final year?
There's material about Ben's childhood that we're missing, and I think that could be explored this season, possibly.

Last question: What has surprised you in season five so far?
What has surprised me? Oh, I'll tell you what has surprised me: That Ben seems to have a real plan! You'd think I would be the last one to be surprised by that, but he's doesn't miss a beat. It's kind of interesting—it's kind of breathtaking, really.
