Re: Rock covers. When the cover was better.

Better yet, how about a Metal cover of a modern-day classical tune from a popular movie?

Here's a fan video featuring the original piece...

Here's the Metal Version...

Hard-Fi's version of Britney Spear's Toxic is way better.

Yeah, but there's no Wee-ah-wee-ah in that version. Plus, what's with the random Clash in there?

Otherwise, yeah, that's a good version.

I think the random Clash in it is awesome.

Check out this version of What you waiting for? by Gwen Stefani performed by Franz Ferdinand.

Disclaimer: It has random Billy Idol in it.

GNR's cover of the Rolling Stones classic, Sympathy for the Devil was pretty damn good. I won't say it's better but, it is pretty darn good.
I've always thought Guns N' Roses' version of Live and Let Die took a pretty shitty song and made it quite good.

And The Clash did a dynamite cover of I Fought The Law.

Well, I love the Clash, it just caught me by surprise.

Thanks for the warning. That's pretty cool too (although I am fortunate enough to not know the original).

"All Along the Watchtower" by Jimi Hendrix.
The definitive cover. After Hendrix' version, everyone does All Along The Watchtower like Hendrix did it, even Dylan.
BSG didn't, though the actors seemed to be humming the Hendrix version, which didn't go with the source music in the final production.

Well, so many covers suck (Satisfaction covered by Brittany Spears, for example) that, when a cover is great, people assume it has to be better than the original.
If you want a cover of "Satisfaction" go with Devo.

Re: Rock covers. When the cover was better.

I may catch some shit for these, but

I like Pantera's cover of "Planet Caravan" or Sabbath's version, I know, heresy.

Van Halen's "You Really Got Me" over The Kinks

RATM's "How Could I Just Kill A Man" over Cyprus Hill

Foo Fighter's "Down In The Park" and Fear Factory's "Cars" I was just never a fan of Gary Newman's voice.

Ok, here's the big one, I love Blue Oyster Cult, but, Metallica truly owned Astronomy.

And I'm sorry, but seriously, GnR's version of Sympathy? I was just cringing at it the other day when they played it on the radio, even Slash is on the record saying "This is the sound of the band ending."

Rush's cover of "Heart Full of Soul" is just so much better than the original. At least IMO

Lucky Jim's cover of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah". Yeah, I said it.

^Buckley's cover remains the King Of The Hallelujah's for me. Simply outstanding.

Ellen Foley's cover of "Stupid Girl" was superior to the Stones.

I'll probably be burned at the stake for this, but who cares: With the exception of "Hurricane", I prefer pretty much any Dylan song as performed by anyone other than him.
