So really...what's the difference between all the sombreros and the .NOT .DEAD thing 2 or 3 years ago?
What I mean is the not dead thing made many people roll their eyes and complain about avatars others had, but this sombrero one is immune.

Because the Sombrero thing is fun and the NOT.DEAD. is fandom being in denial about something that happened that they didn't like so they pretend it "didn't happen."

Because the cool kids all wear sombreros. They used to take the .not.dead kids' lunch money, spank them and stuff them into lockers.

The sombrero thing is cool. Not. Dead. was stupid and idiotic. Although, it did get quite amusing when people began coming up with parodies like Picard Not. Bald. Or an image of bread captioned Not. Bread.

Yeah, I never had a problem with that one. It was amusing in a schadenfreude kind of way then it got genuinely funny.
