Weddle and Thompson Join 'CSI'

David Weddle and Bradley Thompson trade science fiction for forensic science.

Weddle and Thompson joined the writing team of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and wrote twelve episodes for the series in the late 1990s, including "Extreme Measures", "Prodigal Daughter" and "Inquisition". Former Deep Space Nine producer Ron Moore later invited the pair to join the SciFi Channel series Battlestar Galactica. Now Weddle and Thompson will begin working in a new franchise: CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.

The move to CSI will keep the pair from penning the Battlestar telemovie. "When we got the offer, we had to call Ron Moore and ask to be released from the movie," Weddle told SyFy Portal. "It was one of the most difficult calls we ever had to make, but Ron made it easy by telling us we should seize this new opportunity."

Weddle and Thompson will start working on CSI July 7, ending a five-year stint on Battlestar. "A five-year journey, the ride of a lifetime, is at an end," Weddle said. "It's heartbreaking, but I'm incredibly grateful that I could be a part of it."

Great writers. And hey its not like they are really leaving BSG, the series is over (in terms of writing) its just side projects left.

They will bring alot to CSI I think, they are very good at making technical stories interesting.

Hopefully they can do something with the characters on that show, who always seemed relatively flat and boring when compared with other shows.

Maybe, but CSI's characters are actually relatively interesting, when compared with the other CSI spinoffs.

I always thought the characters were that show's strength. I can't even watch any of the others.

Anyhow, its good news. Maybe I will have to start watching CSI again. I got thoroughly tired of it over the years. My wife still watches it, I just don't always bother to watch it with her anymore.

I'm with you on the original CSI. I actually really like the characters there even if they're not as fully evolved as on other shows. Contrary to the other CSI's they actually come off as a team and are likeable IMHO (I particularly enjoy Grissom).
They also come across as people who try to base their judgement solely on facts and don't prejudge. I also think they're not as arrogant and righteous as some of the characters on the other CSI's.

Concerning the news itself, I think that's pretty cool. Weddle and Thompson have done some great work on DS9 and nuBSG IMHO, and I think they'll probably continue doing well on CSI.

Do these guys write as a team or something? Are they joined at the hip? Siamese twins? Gay couple? What's the deal?

They are writing partners... its not an uncommon thing.

I think surely they'd find CSI frustrating? Not that I've seen CSI much, but I believe it's like other procedurals such as Cold Case where the characters don't get a whole lot of range/development do they?

^They do occasionally have running storylines which culiminate at the end of a season (Grissom's deafness, Sidle's alcoholism) but character development is secondary.

I was a CSI fanatic for about six months. I used to watch it all the time on Spike. Now, however, I can't even tolerate it. The characters are flat, and the "science" on that show is so far out now that it may as well be science fiction.

That, and I really, really wish that they would turn on a light every now and then.

A comparable show that is about a million times better is NCIS. It has much better characters, and doesn't take itself nearly as serious. It's just a fun show.

^I used to watch all three shows religiously. Now, I get fed up with the character's judgemental behaviour ("He was in to what ? He must be the murderer!") and the fact that every week one of the characters would pull out some deeply specialised knowledge of a subject they had never previously been seen to have any interest in.
