No Slowing Down For Shatner

Although seventy-seven, William Shatner shows no signs of heading for the rocking chair just yet.

As reported by The Dallas News, Shatner wants to make the most of the time that he has left. "I don't have much time left," he said. "So if I'm hustling at all it's because...It's the football hustle. 'Let's move at a double pace because the yards are giving out. Double time now because there isn't that much time.' You may interpret it as a hustle. I'm thinking, 'Let's get some stuff, let's get it all done.'"

But Shatner realizes what is important in life, family and friends. He wrote his latest book for his family. "This is a good opportunity to write something that was in effect a legacy for my children and grandchildren and give them a taste of what my life was about," he said.

But not everyone appreciates his new book. As reported at monstersandcritics.com, the family of Nerine Shatner feels that Up Till Now is "riddled with discrepancies about the fateful night of August 9, 1999," when Shatner found his wife in their pool at their home. According to Nerine's brother William Kidd, "they're fed up that Shatner's exploiting her death to sell his recently released memoirs."

Kidd feels that Shatner didn't do all that he could have on the fateful night. "The natural reaction of a loving husband would be to start CPR," he said. "But Shatner didn't do that, and he hosted Rescue 911 for years!

Yeah, right.



Shatner hosted Rescue 911, yes. That doesn't make him a bloody paramedic though! Why should anyone expect him to know CPR just because he was host of some TV show?

On the other hand, one tends to pick up a few facts when doing a theme-oriented TV show. One of the most obvious is when to start CPR. Most people would do that without having done a TV show about paramedics. I think Nerine's family are deeply suspicious of The Shat.

So, do you think he could realign the deflector dish of an Excelsior-class starship because he did that in GENERATIONS?

One of Shatner's points in going over that painful episode again is that until you're staring a situation like that in the face, you never really know how you'll react. Over the years, he's asked himself over and over again the same question, why didn't he dive in after her? Why did he call 911 first?

Putting aside the fact that, as anyone who's heard the tape of his call can easily confirm, he was in full-on freak out mode, one thing that stuck in his mind, but really didn't pick up on consciously for a long time, was that the water in the pool was perfectly still.

In other words, she'd been down there long enough that there were no remaining waves from her falling in.

In other words, in the back of his mind, he already knew she was dead and had been for quite a while, and diving in after her wasn't going to make a lick of difference. Which probably goes along ways towards explaining his total freak-out; not only was his beloved wife dead, but he was completely and utterly powerless to do anything about it.

When faced with that kind of conflict, it is a perfectly normal reaction to freeze up.

If anything, he should be credited with having at least enough rational capacity to call 911.

That's ridiculous! There's a difference between fantasy and real life. There is no such thing as a deflector dish. There is such a thing as CPR. There are also creative and expert consultants that work on these shows.

Besides, Shatner should have known how and when to administer CPR without being on Rescue 911. He could have at least tried. Perhaps he did. I wasn't there. And yet, Narine's family is suspicious. I don't think we'll ever know the whole story. Same as Natalie Wood, and Nichole Brown Simpson. OK, I was just kidding about that last one!

Being an actor reading a script for a television show doesn't automatically mean the actor should know CPR. He's an actor not a rescue professional. Not everyone knows CPR, even though we wish they did.

Shatner's job on Rescue 911 was to host. That's all. Introduce and link the segments. Did he do that? Yes. Then he's done all he was asked to do - and all that anyone has any right to expect from him.

Just because one hosts a show does not mean they should be expected to know everything about its subject matter. No one seriously thinks Robert Patrick is a cop just because he narrates Disorderly Conduct, or that Liam Neeson is a mountain climber because he narrated the IMAX Everest film, or that Morgan Freeman is a NASA scientist because of his work on Cosmic Voyage, etc. etc.
