Shatner Wasn't Keen on Gene Roddenberry

According to William Shatner, Gene Roddenberry was exploitative in his attempts to make money.

As reported by Parade Magazine, Shatner didn't approve of Roddenberry's ways when it came to trying to extract money from his cast. "He was a chiseler who wanted a cut of outside money his cast earned, demanded to be called 'master,' and prohibited poor Nimoy from using a company pencil."

"After the first thirteen episodes writer/producer Gene Coon was brought in and Roddenberry became the executive producer, meaning he was more of a supervisor than working on the show day-to-day," explained Shatner, as reported by Trekmovie.com. "After that his primary job seemed to be exploiting Star Trek in every possible way."

Shatner described how Roddenberry tried to get twenty-per-cent of Nimoy's speaking fee for an engagement once, even though Nimoy already had an agent. Nimoy needed to leave work an hour early one Friday to make the speaking engagement. On that Friday, Roddenberry called Nimoy into his office. When Nimoy protested, saying he already had an agent, "He [Roddenberry] looked at me and said, 'The difference between your agent and me is that your agent can't get you out of here at five o'clock on Friday and I can," said Nimoy. "And all it'll cost you is twenty percent." Further protests led to Roddenberry informing Nimoy that, "Well, you're just going to have to learn how to bow down and say master." Nimoy stuck to his guns and Roddenberry backed down but for Nimoy, it "was the end of any semblance of a friendship" with Roddenberry.

I wonder how many more stories of interpersonal mistakes that were made 40 years ago we can dig up here. Thank you Mr. Shatner...

Has Nimoy ever brought this up? If so, I've never read about it before. If not, why is The Shat relating this story and not Nimoy?? I demand proof!!!

I find it funny that stories of the Shat's antics are usually taken at face value whereas accusations against Roddenberry are not. From what I've read Roddenberry wasn't exactly a sweetheart.

Yeah, so this latest news isn't surprising. This is the man that wrote lyrics to the Star Trek theme tune so he could screw over Courage for some more cash.

Wow. And people argue about Roddenberry's personality.

I believe it. GR wasn't above cheating the hell out of people, which is why so many talented people fled the production.

I remember the story of how GR made Nimoy (as Spock) wear the IDIC pin over Nimoy's objections. GR intended to sell these pins to fans, etc.

Yep. I think that happened during S3. There's also the stories about how he stole company property (such as old film) to sell to collectors.

Trying to remember for sure, but wasn't that what happened to the stock footage of the original romulan warbird, which necessitated the bit about "romulans now using klingon ship design" in The Enterprise Incident?

Well, as Nimoy's boss, Roddenberry didn't necessarily have to let Nimoy go early, but he certainly need to be such a dick about it.

Maybe it's because so many of the people invovled with TOS are dead now, and the rest of us have nothing new to talk about.

What interests me is how long will it be before we start hearing stories of constant, never-ending hatred between the casts and crews of TNG, DS9, VOY, and ENT. Oh sure, they've had their porblem stories over the years too, but nothing that even comes close to the original group.

Re: Shatner Wasn't Keen on Gene Roddenberry

Yeah, I hope that doesn't happen. I like thinking that for the most part these actors got along well. I can't actually recall any of the newer casts saying they specifically didn't like another actor.

Does anyone?
