As much fun as it was to watch Smith bounce around the room and talk a mile a minute, watching Capaldi simply stand in one place and be intimidating as hell should likely be just as fun.
Actually I found Capaldi much more bouncy than I expected. He can do both, I guess.

Also, this feels like a strange thing to say, but I'm almost getting an early Tom Baker vibe from Capaldi. In his early stories like Robot and The Ark in Space, I got a similar feeling that this new Doctor was a bit unreliable, and potentially as frightening as the villain. Heck, in Robot, the Fourth Doctor has to be tricked into staying on Earth to help out.
I got a bit of that vibe too. Baker was the Doctor when I was a child and though I didn't see much of it, he used to scare me as much as the villains. The googly eyes and manic grin. I think it may be Capaldi's eyes that evoke the same sort of vibe for me.

I didn't care for Matt Smith's cameo. A redundant passing the torch which has already been passed and actually ruined the momentum of the new Doctor. So we have Capaldi, in costume with sort of new console room, essentially declaring "I'm here, I'm the Doctor now." And then we get Smith popping back to say all those things that should be said in the regeneration scene and were. Redundant and pointless.
I don't know, I think we needed that scene in order to get that great moment of vulnerability from Capaldi's Doctor at the end, as he feels like Clara just can't see that he's really the same guy she just talked to on the phone.

Not only does it make you instantly feel for him and see that he really does need Clara's help and acceptance, but it makes you understand why Clara would want to stay with someone as outwardly cold and abrasive as Capaldi in the first place.

Because otherwise I'm not sure I really would have bought her wanting to stay (especially when she's not obligated to follow him around like companions of the past have been).
To me, the "Doctor always has my back" moment could have been the moment she realized he was the Doctor still.

What I noticed was that, according to Strax's brain scan, Clara watches gay porn.
Or lesbian porn or heterosexual porn given Strax's inability to tell genders apart.

As for the episode, we rewatched it last night, as these things go, it was a good episode, loved the Scottishness, I thought at first Moffat was recycling GitFP out of laziness, but glad he made reference and The Doctor not actually remembering (given Ten never knew the name of the ship then) and I almost welled up watching the phone call.

As for Clara I could feel/relate to her pain through the episode concerning The Doctor, he went from a 30 year old male who looked young and in his prime of his live to a 50 plus year old male with grey hairs and lines. Of the versions Clara witnessed, of all the regens we've seen, that's never happened. I knew he was the Doctor, but because it was such a shift to what I and Clara knew, then that's what threw her, and me and that's the whole point of the vail scene and the phone call at the end. He may look different, he may act differently, but he is still The Doctor. Something Clara knew deep down, as she was calling him that from the first instant she appeared, but in her eyes, something must have gone wrong and he may not be The Doctor she knew.

I loved that.
it's been a thousand (1000) years since he encountered the clockwork robots.
how likely is it, that he would remember that.

Clara's reaction to him surprised me at first, but upon further reflection it makes sense...

While Clara knew about regeneration, she [apparently] didn't have a lot of interaction with Doctors 1-10; she popped into their timelines and saved them, but 11 was HER Doctor, the one she knew. This was her first realization that he becomes both the same person and a different one, and that was [understandably] pretty jarring.

And Capaldi's performance just gets even more impressive the more you watch it as well. I especially love that final scene with the cyborg, when he starts out by calmly saying "I've got the horrible feeling that I'm going to have to kill you." It's such a great delivery, and such a different characterization than we've seen with the Doctor in a while.
That scene is still on my mind, two days after having seen the episode. Quite impressive.

I don't think it was that. I don't even think it was a lack of understanding of the idea of a new incarnation being both the same and different.

She was just going through the stages of grief for Elven, pure and simple -- and among the stages of grief are bargaining and denial.

I agree with the few who've said Clara's reaction was understandable. We've seen no evidence that Clara actually went through a Regeneration with The Doctor before. Yes, she knows he's had many other faces, and that it's called Regeneration, she's never actually experienced or gotten to know any other incarnations, she's just popped into The timeline, done what needed to be done to cancel out The Great Intelligence's tampering, and then moved on.

This time, she watched her friend, that she may have liked more than just friends, die, and be replaced by a new man. Intellectually, she knows that's what he does, but, to think her experiences would prepare her for it, is (IMHO), about the same as knowing a close friend has a fatal disease and is wasting away, and expecting that would prepare you for them to die, just becauses you knew they were sick for months. Sure, intellectually, you know they're in a better place, and better off to no longer be suffering, but, that doesn't stop you from feeling the loss or feeling guilt that you didn't do this or do that.

As has also been pointed out, she watched him age 1000 years and die, in what was to her a single day (Kinda like watching someone else's life flash before your eyes)

All the education and knowledge in the world isn't going to completely prepare you for that, or stop the pain, and I believe people are projecting more experience with Regeneration onto her than she actually has.

I don't remember, does Clara remember going thru the Doctor's timeline saving him, or was that wiped?

I know she remembers some things, but doing what she did, she lived possibly hundreds or thousands of lives saving the Doctor. She can't possibly remember all those lives.

Speaking of porn, I think PC got a little too excited after his hug with Clara at that end, either that or he has more related to a horse than we thought?

In Day of the Doctor when Clara meets the Tenth Doctor and War Doctor, the Eleventh reminds her "you've met them before."

If Jenna hugged you, would your reaction be any different? I know mine certainly wouldn't...

I'm sure it's also more jarring when it's *her* Doctor who changes. And, she probably expected that he would regenerate into a younger body. Humans are humans, and we'll judge by outer appearances, especially when it comes to potential mates!
