This week's contest is about anything typically or characteristically Australian. With such a lot of really cool entries it's a very hard choice this time.
Please vote for 2 (not your own)

    Voted :)

My appologies for starting the poll 90 mins late: my internet connection is rather fragile and I only just now managed to get online.

This is thrilling :) We have a tie between RJD and JiNX and there's a day left for votes.

Heh. Last time we each got zero votes for our competing cheesecake and beefcake and this time we're tied for first place. :D

Seems like I am the only person who loves opals.

Rhubarbodendron have you heard of Eric the Opalised Pliosaur? Back in 1993, when it looked like he would be sold overseas, a TV science program started an appeal to raise enough money for him to be kept in Australia. Within a few weeks $450,000 had been raised much of it coming from fundraising efforts of schoolchildren including my own children who donated their allowance. The Australian Museum ended up with him and they had so much money left over that Eric was able to go on a nationwide tour. My kids loved being able to see him with their own eyes. He is very beautiful, I don't think any photos of him do him justice.

I recall having heard of him but I've never seen pictures. I own a tiny opalized Nautilus shell, though, so I can imagine what he might look like.

Opals are a pretty cool variation of quartz! I've always been a bit envious as we don't have an opals here. But then we have rose quartz, amethysts, citrin, sceptre quartz, rutil quartz, layer quartz, hyalithe etc. :) I used to collect everything in the quartz-line but now my collection is quite complete. Most of it I found myself. Only the opals are bought. I have a black one, a few sparkly white ones and a few pieces of opal matrix (mostly black opal and the milky variant)

No, there was just that thing with the hammock and the inner tube last time, and I thought it was funny that we both got nothing. This just makes it funnier. Or maybe I just have a weird sense of humor. :rommie:
