In keeping with JD's opening of the review thread for The Rings of Time by mid-month in case of not-unheard-of early arrivals, here's the review thread for That Which Divides, a new Pocket TOS novel by Dayton Ward to be released on February 28th, 2012.

His frequent writing partner Kevin Dilmore is absent from the cover this time, however an interview on StarTrek.com (mostly about Vanguard: Declassified) had earlier established him as a collaborator on the story.

That Which Divides is set during the original five-year mission. Here is the blurb from the Simon & Schuster website:

I could have sworn it was co-written by Kevin Dilmore. Was his name removed after the cover was first released?

I was hoping someone would catch that ball, because I'm very curious what's the story there, too ...

Edit: And yes, an earlier version of the cover did also list Kevin:

    "That Which Divides"

    Sounds familiar. Another Rush reference?

I suspect it's going to end up like Open Secrets: Dayton gets... whatever the literary equivalent of the teleplay... credit (and cover credit), while both are credited for the story on the title page.

Hm, why does that happen, though? Does it strictly imply Kevin co-developed the story but didn't actually put any of the words down, or is it a mere artifact of contract negotiation? Do US writers have a guild that regulates/requires crediting rules/standards similar to how it works in Hollywood, or is it more free-form?

Were I a Founder, I would now physically reshape into a man-sized question mark.

What happened on Open Secrets, IIRC, was that it was originally supposed to be by both authors, and they outlined it together, but Kevin had to bow out due to other things going on in his life and didn't think he deserved full cover credit, so he just got a "Story by" credit inside.

I don't know what the situation is on That Which Divides, though. (And to vegaslover62, could it be that the title reminds you of the TOS episode "That Which Survives"?)

I know the TOS reference, but Dayton Ward hasn't really made a habit of doing Trek references in his titles. He does have a habit of making Rush references, though. I think I'm thinking of their song Territories:

    Better the pride that resides
In a citizen of the world
    Than the pride that divides
When a colorful rag is unfurled

I wasn't saying that was Dayton's intended reference, I was just saying that might be why you thought it sounded familiar.

This one's coming late, I guess; usually people start getting them about a week before the on sale date.

I remember reading a while ago an interview with Wardilmore (or maybe just one of them) where they lamented never having been able to write an honest to goodness 5ym story; I'm really excited that they finally got the chance.

Haha; look at that. It'd fallen off the front page, I didn't see it.

    Oops!

Mods, feel free to kill, merge, or lock this; whatever's easiest.

Hmm, I wonder if review threads for current/recent books should be temporarily pinned to avoid such duplications? Mods?

Merging (or deleting) would work best for me btw, then I wouldn't have to blacklist the dupe.

I'll go ahead and bump up this review thread, since I see people posting about getting this book and it had gone off the front page.

The other review thread I accidentally made is still hanging around down there somewhere; if a mod could delete or merge it, that would be awesome.

I thought it was David Mack that did all the RUSH references.

Dayton and I split them up. He references more titles, and I reference more lyrics.
