Deadline has just announced that Benicio Del Toro's been cast in the film, and they've also confirmed John C. Reilly's involvement by listing his name among the actors BDT will be joining.

Says he signed a multi-pic deal. Who then?

Might he be doing mo-cap for Thanos? F/X and CGI layered atop.

Can't think of who else in this cast would need a multi-pic deal.

BDT as Thanos would be a damn good idea. He'd look sick with CGI'd purps and his voice would definitely fit. Good call Cap.

Thanos does seem to be the popular theory on most of the sites I go to.

I don't post that many places so seems the idea makes a bit of logical sense to a lot of folks then.

Wherever you go, there you are.
Comic Book Movie is claiming a Marvel source says Del Toro is playing Taneleer Tivan aka the Collector. Big grain of salt since it's CBM, but we'll see how things turn out.

Is he a major enough character that they'd want to use him in multiple movies? I'd never even heard of him before today.

    That's some really bad CGI.

This movie looks to be quite the wildcard entry.

^ Now I'm picturing Rocket Raccoon in the Bruce Willis role in Pulp Fiction.

Well, Guardians has the potential to be something like Star Wars. Strange, kid friendly aliens like Rocket and Groot; Han Solo type personality with Starlord; silent, gruff companion with a heart in Drax; a Ben Kenobi type if they included Warlock; and a feisty girl who can kick butt in Gamora. The formula is there; and I'm sure Disney is thinking that.

So which series do you guys think would probably be better for a GoG newbie who wants to familiarize himself with the characters before the movie. The DnA one or the Brian Michael Bendis one?

I can't really speak to the DnA stories, but as Bendis' run (which I am enjoying greatly) is only just beginning, I would say look up DnA's run.

Actually, JD (and any others interested in Marvel Cosmic), the place you really should start with is Jim Starlin's original Captain Marvel/Adam Warlock/Thanos stories. Starlin did for Marvel Cosmic what Chris Claremont did for for mutant books.

The Life and Death of Captain Marvel is out of stock at Amazon proper, but you can still get a good price at the Amazon Marketplace.

The Essential Warlock not only has Starlin's Warlock work, but also the work of the writers who came before him. The final story in this volume, the two-parter that crossed over from Marvel Team-up Annual 2 to Avengers Annual 7 is cited by Joss Whedon as one of his quintessential Avengers stories.

No problem. You would want to start with the CM volume, up 'till the "Death of Captain Marvel" GN. At that point, you would read the Warlock volume (Sadly, the "Essential" volumes are in B&W), and then finish off with "The Death of Captain Marvel".

I'm surprised this rumor didn't come up already here: Karen Gillan's character might actually be Marvel's newest character, former Spawn ally/adversary Angela, which would be freaking awesome.

That certainly would be an interesting development. Didn't she briefly appear in the Spawn movie?

^ I don't remember her being in the movie, but, then again, I didn't even remember who her character was until I looked her up despite being a major Spawn fan.
