Major chemical explosion in Waco area... Any Waco folks, check in, please! At least 100 people may have been injured according to CNN (on television, website not updated yet). Fertilizer plant explodes in Waco. Edit- can a mod change my title to Waco area?
Actually - in West Texas, a fair bit north of Waco... Still, a VERY bad explosion and the town is a bit messed up right now. They need our support as much as Boston does.
There is an explosion in Oklahoma City as well, near a lot of propane tanks; http://www.okcfox.com/newsroom/top_stories/videos/kokh_vid_10717.shtml Man.
WARNING: Disturbing (audio) video of the fertilizer plant explosion [yt]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ROrpKx3aIjA[/yt] Apologies in advance if this is some prank video.
I zoomed in on that. Map I'm not sure if the link will work right, but I just googled 812 N. Bryant in Oklahoma City and it popped right up.
Damn, you really are having a very sad and bad week in the USA Horrible explosion..seems there are many dead and injured. My deepest condolences and speedy recovery to those who have been hurt. I hope all the BBS members who are from Texas are OK, plus their families and friends, too?
Not a prank video, that's actual video taken during the explosion. I work about 10 miles south and could feel it here.
What the hell is going on this week? CNN is saying only 2 dead in Texas, though. I hope that's correct, as opposed to the 60. I don't see any reports of deaths in Oklahoma. I hope it stays that way. I hope casualties stay low.
I share your hope, but it's hard to see how it could have reduced a whole 50 unit apartment block to a skeleton and only killed 2 people. I think the unfortunate reality here is that the death toll is going to rise quite a bit.
I think the number will be higher as there were firefighters there trying to put out a previous fire that rekindled. There was a solid stream of ambulances and fire trucks headed North as I was headed home at 10:30. I just hope my coworkers and friends from West are OK, it's not a very big town and that was a huge explosion. They had evacuated quite a few places when the plant originally caught fire, I hope that will help keep the death toll lower.
Near Waco _and_ in Oklahoma City -- unsettling coincidence given the date is near the anniversary of the OC bombing.
I get the impression that might have been caused by the recent cluster of earthquakes that area has seen in recent days. May have weakened some structures out there. Still...all these egregiously bad things happening all at once around the same time, year after year. It does seem a tad odd...
It's just statistical clustering. We find it odd because our brains are wired to see patterns. We often see patterns where, in reality, there are just coincidences. Not to say there's never a genuine, deliberate pattern, but humans have a tendency to jump to conclusions because we so readily sense patterns everywhere.
Has there been corroboration of the Oklahoma incident? I can only find that one news site, which has had nothing new for 13 hours.
