The Ultimates vol. 1 and 2, the Ultimates 2 vol. 1 and 2 and the Ultimate X-Men: Ultimate War and Ultimate Spider-Man: Ultimate Six trades.

they are rather similar in how the team relates to SHIELD and how/why the team is put together to the movies, i feel. plus, they're all balls-to-the-wall widescreen action.

I've never quite understood the term "widescreen action" in regards to comic books.

I don't know, I think the problem is more with the fact that both Banner and Hulk come across as fairly one-note characters in these movies: Banner is on the run, trying to find a cure, and Hulk is a big green monster who smashes things (until the love interest predictably appeals to his humanity and gets him to stop).

Those two facts are established really early on... and then that's as far as it goes. It never seems to get more interesting or complex than that, unfortunately.

It doesn't help that we're asked to sympathize with Banner and his desire not to become a monster, and yet the entire time the audience secretly WANTS to see the monster get loose and destroy shit-- because that's when the movie actually becomes fun. lol

Kirby was doing "widescreen action" before Hollywood was.

Yeah...still don't know what that actually means.

Imagine comic book panels akin to widescreen aspect ratio television screens and there's your explanation :)

they use a lot of splash pages or double-page spreads in action sequences.

and Ultimates 2 #13 has a six-page (i think) fold-out spread of the Ultimates fighting.

It should be noted that the majority of non-Ultimate Avengers storylines do not really focus that much on the Avengers who will be in the movie, since the 'big 3'(Thor, Cap, Iron Man) mainly were developed in their own books (and Thor and Cap have been dead and later ressurected recently), Hulk of course has only been a member a few times. There's a lot of Hawkeye stuff that's good, although Hawkeye has been on other teams at times such as the Avengers West Coast and the Thunderbolts.

If there is a sequel though I think they'll be adding more members. The Vision (A robot) I feel is the most likely candidate, with Hank Pym (A scientist with many, many identities that mainly deal with him shrinking or growing) and Wasp (who shrinks and grows wings and is often married to Pym) possibly being added. Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver and a few others are problematic because they are mutants and Fox owns the X-men film rights.

Fine by me. X-Men would just end up single-handedly hijacking the entire Marvel Movie Universe anyways, with all their planetary crises and intergalactic tomfoolery.

^ I doubt that. That doesn't even happen in the comics, at least recently anyway. The X-Men have been kept pretty separate from the rest of the Marvel Universe only occasionally interacting.

What about Ms. Marvel, she seems to be (or have recently become) a fairly prominent character with Avengers ties.

Ms. Marvel would be awesome. Yvonne Strahvorski from "Chuck" would be a good pick to play Carol given that Scarlett Johannson is Black Widow. I'd add Hank and Janet as well and boom there is your recruitment drive.

Mark Ruffalo tweeted that principal photography wrapped on "The Avengers".

Yvonne would be better as Mockingbird than as Ms Marvel, I'd say.

I'd rather her be Ms. Marvel, Yvonne or not. The Avengers could use an airborne female imo and Mockingbird really isn't that much different from Black Widow.

Sigh, it's official that Silvestri is doing the score for this. Here's hoping it's more inspired and exciting than his utterly dull Captain America score.

I posted a link earlier in the thread (a couple pages back) that Silvestri is confirmed as doing the score. I liked his Cap score. It's one of my favourite scores of the year.

I liked Silvestri's score for Cap, been listening to it in the car for the last few days. But I have to admit to preferring Patrick Doyle's score for Thor. It has a more epic sound to it.

So that's who I would have chosen to score The Avengers, but this may work out. We'll have to wait and see.

Mrs. Marvel definetly could work, if they stick to the basics of her story (Military Woman with alien powers), as her comic backstory is really convulted (and tied with the X-men to boot).

So the movies are really following the canon of the comics!
