Eh, that was a decent hour and forty minute Corvette commercial. You see, the bad guys steals a Corvette and performs awesome driving maneuvers with his stolen Corvette. The Corvette outruns everything and is an amazing car. At one point the Corvette is even referred to as a Batmobile, further implying that the Corvette is awesome. Did I mention that there was a Corvette? Because the movie certainly does every chance it gets.

I saw it tonight as well. I found it to be an enjoyable film actually and I didn't even have low expectations. Middling ones perhaps and it reached that easily. I will say I was relieved that Johnny Knoxville doesn't ruin the movie. He has his comedic bits per the role he has but he's only in the last act really after a brief intro in the first act.

The one glaring problem in the film is:
Why the hell were road spikes not once per down? The FBI guys liked to credit the guy has being smart and well supplied. Kicked themselves when he had contingency plans for roadblocks. So make Mr.Smart Drug Lord even smarter by having a plan against the most obvious action---road spikes.

I'm not going to oversell it despite my grade, it's a solid renter but it was fun. If this weren't Arnold I'd have waited for DVD, it was one of the few guilty pleasures I allow myself and broke my soft rule about "big screen necessity". I like my 80's action stars, I'll see Bullet to the Head also---and that one my expectations are low.

They shouldn't, because I want to see that.

First film he does after ten years, and the hyaena are already waiting. It's a film like Walking Tall (which coincidentally also had Knoxville in a similar role) which made about 60 million worldwide with a PG-13 rating. Anyone who expected this film to do more is nuts.

Wow, really surprised it flopped so badly. Even with the so-so reviews, I figured more people would be in the mood to watch Arnold kick ass in a movie again. At least enough to put it at #3 or 4 (and higher than some nothing Mark Wahlberg movie I never even heard of before this!)

Although to be fair, he did look awfully old and slow and tired in Expendables 2. I wouldn't be surprised if that killed a lot of people's interest in seeing him again....

Maybe the action crowd was movie'd-out after ZD30 last weekend... and women/wives/girlfriends may not feel like rooting for him any more.

And really, when was the last time he headlined a hit that wasn't named "Terminator"? 1996's Eraser? Maybe he should have gone for a comedy instead.

I'll redbox this at some point, as I will The Tomb, which I hope does better, but... I dunno...

Not sure I'd call ZDT an action film at all. It has a few moments in it, most notably the ending 20 minutes but even those are more about the tension than what action takes place.
I'd counter with the notion that people were more interested in Gangster Squad for an action alternative if just movie options was the point of contention.

When a movie does this poorly it would be nice to have a clearer picture of just why people didn't show up. Arnold got positive mentions in Expendables so you'd think if just his core base showed up the movie would've done $15-20m. Could people involved in Inauguration activities have hindered things. Tack on the NFL conference games on Sunday as another possible thing that kept people away from that type film that Arnold does?

People still went to the theater obviously, if your name was Jessica it was a stellar weekend. I haven't read yet and it's usually reported at some point what the year-to-year comparison would be for a holiday weekend. If it's down overall that would lend credence to people being broadly distracted by other events and Arnold's base just got hit harder.

I'll plan to see this, but it might have to wait for the dollar theater... I'm jazzed that once again, Albuquerque and the surrounding areas were used for the filming, and I'll be interested to see how they've transformed my hometown into Las Vegas.. Casinos we have, glitz and bright lights, not so much... I'm sure, like the Avengers, CGI will come into play there, or just clever use of stock footage from the Strip...

Overall cinema attendance in action films is down since the latest shootings, in the US.

Arnold's last movies he headlined that grossed $100 million domestically were Terminator 3, Eraser and Batman & Robin. But it looks like The Last Stand won't even make Collateral Damage money.

Not going to do a more formal review given the movie came out last week, but a quick one:

I really enjoyed this movie. It was a lot of fun, good action in it, but a lot of ridiculousness to it. (First of all, I doubt even a super-charged Corvette is going to go nearly 200 miles an hour in reverse!) The blood splatters from the gun shots was way over the top and you knew the kid was dead as soon as he had the heart-to-hear, "I want something bigger!" talk he had with Arnie.

But, over all, it was a fun movie. I enjoyed it I think it shows Arnie can certainly come back into this even though he's looking more and more like the fake rubber Arnie double used for the effects in the first Terminator. Fun movie, and I think it got going more once all of the set-up stuff was over and the "story" was really going (Once Danny Deadmeat Deputy died) the movie got good. A lot of the setup with the most incompetent FBI group ever was boring.

Some stuff was too much to take, like the Corvette that speeding toward Mexico at 200 miles an hour for the better part of day or two and... never... needs... gas?!

    Fun movie.

Or a corvette that can apparently drive at maximum speed even with ANOTHER CAR sitting on its hood?

Just saw it over the weekend and I really enjoyed it. Arnie clearly acknowledges he's getting older in the movie and even makes comments on being an immigrant. Loved it!

... And the abominable, even worse-reviewed Hansel and Gretel nearly doubles Last Stand's first week in its first weekend.

    ... Now that's embarrassing. :(

I thought the same thing and I saw them both.
While I don't pretend Last Stand is a genre redefiner it doesn't deserve the reception it's gotten.

That's pretty damn embarrassing. Man, I don't even know what to make of that? The Hawkeye Effect? I dunno. I went to see TLS simply because of Arnold in it and I enjoyed the hell out of this movie because of that fact.

    Finally got so see it.

It's a fun action flick. Better than End of Days, 6th Day or Collateral Damage, which makes it his best film since Eraser.

They accepted his age, and it worked out perfectly fine.

The shootout at the end had a very nice Western vibe to it, plus the usual Schwarzenegger level of carnage.

I also liked the fight at the end. Arnold's blunt brutality vs. a skilled fighter. The only thing that took away from the fight was that it was obviously filmed in a studio, and not on a real bridge.

But I kept wondering what the film could have been like ten years ago with Arnold.
And what the film could have been like ten years ago with Clint Eastwood.

After seeing this and Bullet to the Head, I'm quite excited for Escape Plan now. I hope it's a hit, because I think Arnie will not make many more movies if it flops.

I really enjoyed it, sad to see how badly it flopped.
