In college I knew a Vietnamese immigrant whose given name was Hong Ngoc, which means Rose Jade IIRC, but she'd been christened Theresa on moving to the US.

On the other hand, I once knew a Caucasian US native who had a Vietnamese given name because her mother taught English as a second language to Vietnamese immigrants. So people's names don't always match their ethnicities.

The person who delivered my newspaper a few years ago was named "Phuc Nguy." I hope he never tries to anglicise it.

According to Google Translate, "hồng ngọc" comes out in English as ruby/carbuncle. However when I put in "rose" and "jade" individually, I got "hồng" and "ngoc", respectively.

On a different subject, does anyone here positively know if Chloe Bennett is biracial? Not that there's anything wrong with it, I'm just curious.

Yes, her birth name is Chloe Wang. According to Wikipedia, her father is Chinese and her mother Jewish-American (their words). She moved to Beijing at 15 and had a career as a pop star under the name Wāng Kěyíng.

Oh, and in her case it's Bennet, just one T.

One of the midwives I worked with in my former life was named Nu Rigby. I hate the practice of women changing their names to their husbands,' but sometimes it has interesting results. Anyway, she came from Vietnam as a boat person and has one of the most amazing success stories of anyone I've met.

The Amy Acker news makes me very happy. I've been a big fan since I first saw her on Angel.

I used to know a Vietnamese guy in elementary/junior high whose given name was Kahn.

It was the early '80s, you can guess how that went down....

Wow, that's much lower-rung than the ones we've gotten so far...the first who's not connected to an Avenger or the Avengers in the comics (not counting Deathlok).

It looks like it's not the same character, just the re-use of the name. But I wonder how many of us remember the original run of Nova from the 70s. :rommie:

    I do!:)

    Guy?

For what it's worth, Blackout played a major part in Roger Stern's epic Avengers "Under Siege" arc as a member of Baron Zemo's Masters of Evil.

I didn't think it was worth collecting until the New Warriors kicked off in 90, but I have a couple issues filed away.
