I'm thinking the villain is going to be very interesting.. as in intelligent and understated and mysterious. Not just bad guy detonating.

He does seem to have some complex personal motivation for once, could be wrong about that but I'm liking how this is shaping up.

If Dr. Soran had been fully developed as in the movie novelization and original concept of Generations he would have been a much more interesting and three-dimensional villain for Picard and Kirk to fight and not just some obsessed guy who lost his family who'll blow anything and everything up to get back to his personal paradise.

If you've ever read the novel of the 1994 film you know that Tolian Soran was a villain more along the lines of Annorax in Voyager, a profoundly decent and intelligent man who was pushed into inconsolable grief and anger due to the Borg attacking and destroying his homeworld and then being ripped from the Nexus by the Enterprise-B rescue mission. He didn't want to kill and destroy to get back inside the ribbon but his anger at having failed to protect and save his wife Leandra and his children just overwhelmed him, and the addictive effects of the Nexus only made things a whole lot worse.

He was much more textured and sympathetic in the novel than in the film. A shame, really. Malcolm McDowell had more he could have played with had the Beebs let him and not been so concerned with keeping the film at just under two hours in running time.

There are a few novels I've read over the years that do a better job of telling the story than the movie, and a lot of the time it's simply for setting the motivations for important characters.

This movie though looks like it'll do a decent enough job on it's own, or at least I'm hoping so.

And the book gives some meaning to Soran's line about Geordie's heart not being into the interrogation; that bit of dark humour falls completely flat in the film.

Editing can hurt a film sometimes, despite the authors' best efforts.

Normally I would agree with you, but there's something about Trek that makes it an odd duckling in this regard. I'm sure most would disagree, but I think the TMP, TWOK, TFF, GEN, and NEM novelizations are all better than their respective films. And TSFS and TUC I'd put at a wash.

I never read the ST09 novel. Interestingly enough, I haven't read FC or INS either and I have both sitting on a shelf. In fact, they've hardly ever been touched. :o

GEN was the first of the novels I'd ever read. Actually, I got the audio book (with the awesome Johnny De Lancie doing the narration) as a gift before I went to see the film. Eddie is right; Soran is so much stronger in the novel. And really, I think experiencing it first made be hate the film less as I tend to think of it way more fondly than most Trek fans.

While we're on the subject, did I read somewhere Greg is doing the novel for STID?

Isn't Alan Dean Foster doing the STID novelization?

I think Greg is doing the Man of Steel novelization, not STID.

    You might be right.

Now that I think about it, I may have got it confused with MoS.

I enjoyed the clip and look forward to the film.

...but the "I can't not express what I'm feeling at all times" chick nearly drove me insane. Holy cow.

I wonder if the fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck chick was the filmer, or with the filmer. I think she may have been sitting in front of the filmer or not with the filmer. If she was really so much of a fan that she was wondering who the villain was I think she would have been wanting that vid to be as interruption free as possible.

On the bright side, there were no kids yelling or cell phones going off. You could bribe a theater crowd with free passes to the next ten movies at their location if they keep all their cell and smartphones turned off during the film and you'd still have some of them not only forget but answer the stupid things right in the middle of the movie.

"Hey, I can't talk right now, man, I'm in the movie theater!

    What? She did? What happened?"

That's never happened to me but there's hardly anyone in the cinemas here, even the big ones for popular films. Maybe they all go Saturday night?

I liked whoever it was in the audience that responded to Noel's "Who are you?" on screen with "That's what we all want to know."
