I'm actually just working my way through my Ben Bova 'Grand Tour' collection again and wondered if any of you guys an gals could recommend something of a similar ilk? I've got Kim Stanley Robinson's MARS TRILOGY and Robert Zubrin's FIRST LANDING waiting in the wings. Any others I should give a try?
Are you kidding? Allen Steele: Clarke County, Space Orbital Decay Lunar Descent High Justice and Exiles to Glory-Jerry Pournelle At Rainbow's End- Vernor Vinge The Stone Canal- Ken MacCleod anything by Cory Doctorow(suggest Down and Out In the Magic Kingdom) Orbit-John Nance The X President- Phillip Baruth Jack Womack's "Dryco" series-suggest Ambient Dhalgren, science fiction novel by Samuel R. Delany That should keep you busy for a while... ed.-Robinson has the 3 Californias novels too. The Gold Coast sounds like what you are looking for, as well.
Thanks Mistral! Just added them to my "research" list! PS Just realised where I recognised the name Allen Steele! I started reading COYOTE some while back and was somewhat put off by the present tense style. Might revisit that!
Check out Peter Hamilton's "Greg Mandel" trilogy, beginning with Mindstar Rising. Hard-boiled sf in a soggy, post-global warming Britain . . . .
Much appreciated Greg, and my thanks to YOU for the Eugenics Wars novels! Loved the intermeshing of the tidbits Trek had thrown at us!
The books I listed are written in a more traditional sense. Have you checked out Robinson's 40 Days of Rain trilogy? Very Near Future about Global Climate Change.
@Mistral: Yea I'd been eyeing that one, though my interest is more 'space' oriented. I'll see how I progress with the Mars Trilogy though. Thanku! @Greg: Actually, it was the EW novels that were part inspiration for my current fanfic trilogy (which I know you're not allowed to read btw!) exploring 2026-2053 era of Trekdom.
I would recommend James P. Hogan's original Giants trilogy, beginning with Inherit the Stars. I'm sure that certain aspects of it may now be outdated, but at the time I read it, it left me thinking 'Wow' when I finished.
