I got the Best of Bowie CD for Christmas, and it really surprised me just how many of his songs I really, really like. I've always thought he was one of the coolest men alive, but I'd never purchased any of his albums. So, just out of curiosity, what are your favorite Bowie songs of all time?
The ones I chose in the poll are definitely up there amongst my favourites. I chose: Changes Suffragette City Rebel, Rebel Heroes Ashes to Ashes Scary Monsters I'd say that Ashes to Ashes is probably my absolute favourite Bowie song - it has been since the first time I heard it when it was first released. I tend to love most of the songs from Hunky Dory, Heroes, Lodger and Scary Monsters. I saw Bowie live in the late 80's - past his songwriting prime? Yes. But what a show!
Some of my fave Bowie songs there too. My personal top 6: Space Oddity Changes Life On Mars? Young Americans Heroes (my all-time favourite Bowie song) Ashes To Ashes Honourable mention goes to The Laughing Gnome.
I -adore- David Bowie. Have been a huge fan of him since I was 14. I'm sad to see that they didn't include any songs from Low in the tracklist, as I really love that album. A couple of my favourite songs that are not in your Best Of, and are not in the Low album, are: Wild is the Wind Lady Grinning Soul Somebody up there likes me Across the Universe ( Yes, it's a remake of the Beatles' song, done in cooperation with non other than Lennon) The Man Who Sold the World Lady Stardust Love you 'til Tuesday Five Years Drive in Saturday Time Sons of the Silent Age Ok, sorry, I got derailed... I'll leave it at that, even though I could go on for quite a while...
Which version of I'm Afraid of Americans is it? I voted for it on the assumption it's the one with Nine Inch Nails which is superb. I would also like to mention Subterraneans seeing as it's not on the list. Or pretty much any track off Low really.
All of them. even though I love what he does with other artists, I think he has something great left in him. The song with TV on the Radio is wonderful and of course "Silly little fat man" from extras.
I think Bowie has had some fantastic albums in recent years. Earthling is really the only one in the last decade I haven't liked all that much. But Outside and especially Heathen I think have been fantastic records. From that list, I'd have to say Life on Mars is one of my faves.
David Bowie is an extraordinary artist. I cannot remember a single song of his I have heard that I did not like from one degree to another.
He sings on the song Province on the record "Return to Cookie Mountain". That record still amazes me every time I listen and Bowie's guest spot just makes it better. Read and interview with him, seems to be a big fan. One of the reasons I checked them out.
I'm a huge Bowie fan and find it extremely difficult to pick just 6 favourite songs but I'll try: Drive-in Saturday (probably my favourite song of his) Station to Station (Title track to one of his best albums) Modern Love (great song from a not so great period in his artistic career but it has nostalgic value for me) Starman (never get tired of hearing this one) Word on a Wing (always imagine this being played in a church) Little Wonder (never fails to make me smile) Other great Bowie songs I enjoy are: Ashes to Ashes, Stay, Pallas Athena, I would be Your Slave, New Angels of Promise, Be My Wife, Always Crashing in the Same Car, Suffragette City, Five Years, Ziggy Stardust, Real Cool World, Diamond Dogs....I think I'll stop there cos' this could run and run My favourite album of his varies pretty often but I have a particular fondness for Station to Station (only six tracks but not a bad one among them)
Thank you for listing these - Wild is the Wind is my absolute favourite Bowie song, but I don't actually own it so I couldn't remember what it was called! Man who sold the world is my second favourite. There's a song of one of his recent albums I love too, but I can't remember it either - shall have to go looking for it. So, my votes are basically the songs I like best that I could remember the titles for - Space Oddity, Ashes to Ashes, Life on Mars, This is not America
Love Bowie, and I have most of his albums. The ones I voted for here were: Ashes To Ashes Suffragette City Life On Mars All The Young Dudes Heroes Changes Though I'm also quite fond of a few songs not on this poll. Among others... John, I'm Only Dancing Aladdinsane Oh You Pretty Things Starman Queen Bitch
I glad as many people like Life on Mars as much as I do. Maybe the recent TV show(s) just have people thinking about it more. I actually like Jump, They Say. I nearly made it one of my six votes. I'm surprised it didn't get any votes at all.
It's a great show, but be sure to watch the original British series, not the horrible American remake. It's basically a '70's cop show, but with the sci-fi premise of a modern day detective who is somehow transported to 1973 and has a fish out of water time dealing with the rough edges of '70's Manchester policing. It's really quite fun and has a good dose of humor to boot. As for me, I'm a life-long Bowie fan. The very fist CD I got of my very own was Bowie, a Christmas gift when I was 9. I have more than 30 albums. I love Hunky Dory, but if I have to choose 6 favorites they would be: Life On Mars Station To Station Sound and Vision Five Years All The Young Dudes (though specifically, live) The Prettiest Star I have a very distinct memory of sitting in the back of the car while my mother, father, and I listened to "Space Oddity." I was 8 years old, and I remember my mom asking my dad, "Do you think it's time we tell Hannah what this song is really about?" and my dad agreeing that they should. They told me it wasn't really about an astronaut, but about drugs. I said, importantly, "Well, I knew that!" But really I was very disappointed because I wanted to be an astronaut!
