That was one of my favorite points as well, the real feel of the insides of a starship, the less pretty but far more practical aspects that gave it the heft it had. One of my particularly enjoyable moments was when the Enterprise emerges from warp as they arrive at Vulcan, and it's almost like you can feel the strain of the ship and it's incredibly powerful engines. For the first time, I felt like the crew were sitting on top of this barely containable power plant that propelled them at unthinkable speeds through space. I never felt that way about any of the previous movies, even the TOS crew movies. With those it all felt seamless, like the ship just glided through space, coming to a stop expertly and instantly, where with STXI, the ship felt palpable, like a real object in space. Loved it.

My god. That is not a review at all. That is a profoundly disturbing and deeply psychotic hissy fit. They did not rape your mother and throw the corpse in a ditch. All they did was reboot.

On a scale from one to ten, minus infinity. It is the worst piece of utmost retarded bovine excrement that I ever had to endure.

Watched it again the other night. Haven't seen it since the theater. Still great. Makes me want more. Talked to someone the other day turned off from Trek since First Contact, and they loved it. "They" being a busload of cheerleading coeds. NOT! (Can I still say that?) Seriously, it was a normal person.

I enjoy Gorn-wrestling, Kung-Fu fortune cookie wisdom and a sprinkling of Twilight Zone and that's what I got with STar Trek. Minus the Gorn wrestling.

I don't care if someone doesn't like the film, that's their prerogative, but the discussion could at least exist on some kind of adult level without descending into childish pedantry.

I'll admit that I didn't really pay that much attention to "minus infinity"; when you've got the elegantly tortured adjective clause "worst piece of utmost retarded" sitting just a few short words over, everything else seems to pale into insignificance.

True, but I'm figuring the previous litany of mangled words acted as potholes on the road of discussion, and then "minus infinity" was the flashing road sign that made me swerve off the road, so as I was blinded by the light, revved up like a deuce another runner in the night...wait, I was going somewhere with this.

Just got done viewing the latest StarTrek (2009) movie.

Disclaimer: The following review is MY OPINION. Please dont get your panties in a bunch if you dont agree with it, nor feel I am starting trouble by expressing MY OPINION.

OK, I dont usually catch movies as soon as they come out and often wait for DVD releases. So I just got done with JJ Abram's rendition of Star Trek yesterday and...

I didn't really know what to make of it. I can sum it up like this: it's like finding a diamond in a pile of shit.

    1. Acting: outstanding (by some). Portrayals of Scotty, Chekhov, Sulu, Bones and Spock where right on.

    2. Direction/Production/Special Effects: another win. We finally get to appreciate the internal size of the Enterprise among other things.

    3. Character development: Sucked!!!

Romulans came across like greasy humans with pointy ears and tattooed faces. Didn't come across as another alien species at all.

Vulcans came across, again as just humans with pointy ears. Their stoic disposition compromised by subtle emotional attitudes and demeanor. However, Spock came across as more Vulcan than the pure-blood Vulcans...and he's half human. Maybe that was intentional...I dont know.

Gratuitous sex: a sign of an adolescent mind eager to prove "that there is nothing wrong with sex so I'll just show it to prove my point." I felt like I was watching a 1970s flick. A mature mind will say the same but also realize that sex has it's place in society and in film making as well. If it doesnt add to the film then it's just fapping material.

The whole Spock/Uhura love affair was just bizarre.:wtf: Granted this movie is an alternate reality version of Star Trek (given you can have an old Spock and a young Spock living in the same universe together) but Spock and Uhura? C'mon guys. Next you'll be telling me Darth Vader built C-3PO.

    Oh, wait...

    Moving along...
Zaldana's portrayal of Uhura was lacking and unconvincing. She did not add to the dignified disposition nor the intellectual demeanor that Nichelle Nichols did to the character. The only thing they had in common was that they are both black, female, and wore 1960s min-skirts.

Kirk in bed with the green chick: Again, just gratuitous soft porn. The green chick came across as some cerebrally vacant white chick in green dye. Nothing more. If you are going to do this, make her exotic (you're getting it on with a freaking alien for crying out loud). Show us why Orion women are know as master's of seduction. Otherwise you just have a fetish for green skin. Shrek, never turn your back on Kirk, so Watch out!!

In short, this movie could have been renamed "Beverly Hills 90210 in Space."

    Lastly: Kirk.

Boy I had trouble with his character. I know this is science fiction but as with all fiction, there has to be an element of reality to it, otherwise it's labeled "fantasy."

Since TOP GUN, we were led to beleive that rebels without a cause and those that buck against the system (especially in military like organizations) somehow win in the end for being, well...assholes.

It doesn't work that way in the real world.

Kirk came across as some punk kid that got extremely lucky and was advanced solely on the basis of that luck alone. Furthermore I failed to undertand how Spock, a Starfleet officer suddenly came under the command of this punk kid, or how Capt Pike decided to make him (Kirk) first officer in the first place.

I come from a military background so I have some concept of "chain of command." But this is fiction, so some logic was naturally thrown out the window to make the movie work, I guess.

    The Future:

From what I've picked up on line there will be sequels. One thing I read in particular kept focusing on the Pon Farr scenes between Spock and Uhura. Pon Farr is just a fancy term for Vulcan sex.

That alone turned me off so I doubt I will be catching any sequels. No doubt Abrams wants to push the edge, so dont be surprised if Sulu's character comes out as gay in honor of George Takei. When it comes to homosexuality in science fiction I always say there are two possibilities:

    1. It has become universally accepted and it doesn't even draw attention.

    or

    2. It doesn't exist anymore because a cure has been found for it.

#2 always gets people chomping at the bit, but that's another topic altogether.

Overall, StarTrek 2009 would have been a great movie but it fell short IMO.

I felt it was okay. There were just certain short-comings in the story that were hard for me to overcome. But I like Star Trek in general and not seeing the sequel on the big screen would just feel wrong.

Besides I need to see it so I can come in here and bitch.

There is an entire forum specifically dedicated to discussing this film and its sequel due in June 2012.

Pretty easy to pick up on the fact that the sequel is well into pre-production and a first-draft script has been completed. Beyond that, there is little if any reliable information as to the story or how character relationships will develop, so discounting the film at this point based on rumors of Spock/Uhura sex is quite premature. Also, to define Pon Farr as merely a synonym for sex is simply wrong. I suggest you watch TOS "Amok Time" for a thorough explanation.

As for Sulu, wild speculation again should have little bearing on your decision to see the film or not. Besides, the idea of sci-fi having only two choices of how to present homosexuality is quite simplistic and unimaginative. I won't take the bait of commenting further on that opinion.

I, for one, am greatly looking forward to Star Trek XII and will indeed see it at the cinema as intended.

I couldn't agree more about the character development. This is hopefully something they make time for in the sequel.
But I don't at all understand your point about anything gratuitous. The only thing remotely approaching it that I can recall is Kirk with the Orion chick that you mentioned, and all I recall that being was 5 seconds of them kissing while on a bed. That doesn't even classify as softcore. It's like no-core. I watched it only a week ago with my family, so I'd remember anything like that feeling awkward.

Aside from that, I agree with most of your points, not as much on the rest. But as you said, you're just giving your own opinion, so that's fine. :techman:
