Again, while certainly hot for her age, too old for Daniel Craig. Good for Gary Oldman.

    Hmm...Cate Blanchett, perhaps?

    Yes, definitely.

On a different topic, I just read an interesting quote from Daniel Craig criticizing Quantum of Solace. Despite its popularity at the box office, I think it's fair to say the film isn't exactly the most popular Bond among fans. (I thought it was fine, but then I consider Casino Royale and QoS to be one single film so I never really bother to judge QoS based on its own merits.) What I've never heard before is the fact Craig says the film was lesser (for lack of a better term) due to the 2007 writers strike preventing the script from being polished properly. He makes the statement (warning: adult language) in this interesting article:

Based on that we should be thankful he came back for Skyfall.

To be honest I think it's pretty clear QoS's script needed a polish, and I like it! That said I like the rough and raw quality it has, I do wonder what it might have been like though.

I never saw a problem with QoS except for the cinematography and editing during the action scenes. Horrible use of shaky cam and fast cuts.

Yep. QoS was, without a doubt, one of the most fast-paced films I have EVER seen. The first time I saw it, I frankly found it at times incomprehensable--and when it ended, I found myself thinking, "What--wait. It's over? Already?"

The second time I saw it, I understood what was going on a lot more--and loved it.

Look...films shouldn't do that--require a second viewing to like it. I think it did require a good amount of polish...and they needed different camera work. It jerked way too much--it cut way too quickly--please keep it FOCUSED...so we can understand what the heck is going on!

I'm no fan of the jerky Bourne action scenes, but I found I acclimatised to QoS quite early on, it might have helped that it was Bond I guess, and I loved that after Casino royale which went on and on and on, it's nice to have a short, snappy 007 flick. I'm hoping SkyFall falls(ahem) between the two in terms of pacing.

I didn't have any huge problem understanding the crux of the story myself, just a shame they couldn't shine it up a bit.

I don't know - there are many films I find I liked more the second or third time around. I think that actually adds to the rewatchability. QoS also works better when watched back to back with Casino Royale. A great non-Bond example was Avatar, which I didn't like at all the first time I saw it (even discounting my dislike of the 3-D), but enjoyed quite a bit more when I saw it a second time on (2-D) Blu-ray.

I agree I'm not a huge fan of the shaky camera or the super-fast edits, but apparently that's what lots of young viewers want now. Blipverts are real and they're coming. One of the worst offenders was the trailer for The Avengers that ran at the end of Iron Man 2. I was completely unable to process most of it because of the fast cuts.

Bond films have always reflected the trends of the times. Watch Live and Let Die and then watch a Pam Grier movie of the same era - no diff. Spy Who Loved Me had a disco soundtrack. Moonraker was made as a direct response to Star Wars. A main selling point of The Living Daylights was the film was going to feature an (almost) monogamous Bond in response to the AIDS epidemic - not kidding, look it up. Die Another Day featured an action-hero Bond girl around the same time things like the Tomb Raider, Underworld and Resident Evil films were taking off (and that's a great example of tastes dictating the series because the Jinx spin-off was cancelled when Tomb Raider 2 underperformed at the box office). Casino Royale capitalized on the huge rise of popularity for Texas Hold'em poker in the first half of the 2000s. And Quantum was a response to the Bourne/24 style of filmmaking.

Now it's had that out of its system Skyfall will probably reflect new trends (not to mention the fact I assume the thing will be in 3-D, unfortunately).

^Not to mention that TWSLM featured a shark and a villain called Jaws a year or two after Spielberg's Jaws, while TMWTGG had martial artists, in the wake of the Bruce Lee craze.

Plus Bond uses a .44 magnum in Live and Let Die which came out maybe a year after Dirty Harry?

Plus, Bond was wearing trench coats and running in bullet time in wake of The Matrix.

What? That didn't happen? Well, it should have.

^ This just gets me thinking about what a Wachowski written and directed Bond film would be like.

That's more of a parody than jumping on the bandwaggon. I love the bit in Moonraker, where the door code is the theme from Close Encounters of the Third Kind.

I think it is obvious that the trend that Skyfall will lift will be ignoring The Last Stand.

Yeah I had a feeling I'd be the only one interested in this. I don't think it would be as bad or out there or whatever as maybe others are thinking. Maybe you get James McTeague to direct it and they just write the thing. I dunno. Michael Fassbender still to star :)

Keanu Reeves as Bond, spouting cod-philosophy in bullet time? No thanks!

I never said that. Keanu would be no where near what I'm thinking about. I'm sure the siblings could make a very traditional Bond movie if they were at all interested.
