I know I must have seen this movie when I was a kid, 'cause some of it was pretty familiar, especially Peppard's mayday call. But, I'm countin' it as a new to me movie, 'cause its been over a million years since I watched it. When I went into work to get my paycheck & schedule, and stuck around to see Oz in 3D. I thought it was alright, kinda silly, and the china girl was the most awesome part. Especially when she pulled a knife... Watched the second season of Boardwalk Empire over the weekend. Went over to the Ritz yesterday afternoon to see Nashville, an old Robert Altman film from the '70s. Ronee Blakely was there, and did a Q&A afterwards. And I got her to autograph my movie ticket. Watchin' FMLB, a standup thing with two of the guys from Broken Lizard talkin' to a crowd in San Francisco. - edit, to add - Watched the latest Craig Ferguson stand up, produced by Netflix & filmed in D.C. Pretty funny, of course, and makes me want to see him live again. And I'm currently sittin' front row center-ish of Theater #2 at the Drafthouse Ritz, waitin' for Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia. BMtHoAG was a pretty good movie. Took me awhile while watchin' it, but I was able to figure out where I knew "Bennie" from - he also played Sgt "Big Toe" Hulka in Stripes. Followed the Sam Peckinpah movie in Theater #2 with Musc Monday's showin' of Josie and the Pussycats in Theater #1 at the Ritz. Dear lord, is there a single frame of that movie that doesn't have product placement?

In the end, I think I prefer The Dark Knight Rises. It had a better balance of story and action. 45. Midnight in Paris (✩✩✩✩) - Blu-ray - Finally saw this. Owen Wilson was Owen Wilson (and nicely dressed too), Rachel McAdams was ravishing, Paris was vibrant (no orange & teal or washed out colors here) and the story was a fun and novel concept. I really liked it. And I thought I recognized the museum guide. I was surprised to see that it was Carla Bruni. Spoiler: the ending. I thought whatsherface at the end would reveal herself to be from the future. A nostalgic time-traveller who went back to meet one of her favorite screenwriters, Gil. The Lives of Others: B+ (German film) The movie is about 7yrs old so I've written a mostly detailed synopsis. It does contain SPOILERS, read at your discretion. SPOILERS . . . . . . The story takes place in 1984 and focuses on the East German/Berlin Stasi agents of the GDR. The Stasi are the enforcers of the communist regime, in place to make sure the populace isn't being influenced by "Western" culture or that they are sympathetic to that culture. I would call the Stasi the secret police(and maybe they were) but everyone in the film is aware of them and their power. The focus is on a playwright named Dreyman, his leading lady and lover Christa, a GDR Minister of something named Hempf along with our Stasi enforcers Grubitz(head of the division) and his trusted agent Wiesler. Spoiler: Begin Spoilers The Stasi men go to one of Dreyman's plays, Dreyman who is well read on Western culture but given a pass due to his plays, and see Minister Hempf there. Hempf is a big fan of Christa and has been using his sphere of power to "encourage" Christa to keep seeing him even though she loves Dreyman. Grubitz and Wiesler discuss looking into Dreyman thinking he's probably dirty(meaning not fully loyal to the GDR) more so than the pass he gets. Since he's a party favorite they think it might be career suicide to investigate him. Grubitz decides to chance it at the close of the play and asks Hempf if they can look into him further. He grants it but only at investigative measures A & B. Dreyman has a blacklisted(which is not approved of speak) playwright friend named Jerska. Jerska despite his talent hasn't been able to get quality talent onto his plays in over 10yrs. This depression causes him to commit suicide. This is the tipping point for Dreyman. Dreyman writes a piece for a West Berlin magazine that outlines how the Stasi track every aspect of East German lives but that suicides are no longer tracked. The reason is because living in such an oppressive place as the GDR leads people to suicide and having the State as a defacto accomplice to "self-murder"(as it's now titled) is unacceptable. This article sets off a firestorm. Meanwhile Christa has still been reluctantly seeing Minister Hempf and to deal with this she's been on a banned drug. Do to the bugging of the house they intercept her and interrogate her. She "agrees" to be an informant, doing so allows her access to her drugs. Stasi top agent Wiesler though is a big fan of Christa and because he is he's actually been doctoring the reports that go back to Stasi headquarters regarding Leyman(codename Lazlo). It's unclear if he's just a big fan or also infatuated with her. However, once she "agrees" to be an informant details of his omissions become a bit clearer even if his boss, Grubitz, can't prove it. The Stasi are trying to track down the typewriter than the Suicide Expse was written on and they know Dreyman has it, Christa has marked the hidden location of it on a floor plan map. Wiesler though has removed it, thus protecting them both(or just Christa?), but Christa doesn't know this. She kills herself over her betrayal thus making all 3 men(Dreyman, Hempf and Wiesler) sad for various reasons. Grubitz demotes Wiesler so low he's essential in the mailroom. Dreyman becomes an author in the intervening years. The film jumps rather quickly from '84, to '87 then to '89. It's this jumpy ending and lack of clarity on why Wiesler did what he did I grade it a B+ instead of higher. Dreyman due to freedom of information of The Wall falls finds out who Wiesler is, his first book published is dedicated to Agent HGW XX/7. This is how Wiesler is thanked and he knows it...movie ends. My first foreign film this year and I must say I really enjoyed it. Since the film is about 7yrs old I hope that semi-thourough review is ok by those participating in the thread.

The trailers had me thinking it was going to be much more stupid funny but was more Looney Tunes funny which I was able to appreciate more. The two girls ages 11&12 loved it and their mother also found it very cute that came with me. Not to mention the audience was very reactionary at the right times. I think this film may just find an audience and coming out as schools across the US stagger their Spring Breaks is sure to help. The father Grugg, voiced by Nic Cage, even has a few flip out moments that you'd expect in a live action performance by Cage. And Guy(the boyfriend character) manages to have his shirt off about the whole time as you'd expect from a voiced by Ryan Reynolds character. Sidekick animal 'Belt' is sure to become a favorite. I saw it in 3-D and while I'm no fan of the gimmick found they utilized it pretty well at a steady pace throughout the film.

Millennium was cheesy '80s scfi movie that I saw the trailer for a lot when I was a kid, but my dad would never let me rent it. Finally saw it...didn't much care for it. TN was Eugene "Rod" Roddenberry's documentary lookin' at his father's legacy. He comes off as a bit of a tool, and there isn't much there for any fans of the franchise, no new insight at all. IP was my 100th "new to me" movie of the year! TFiNYR was a prett good documentary about the MPAA and how film ratings work. TpvsGL just seemed like Star Wars fanboy outrage. E'sF was an interestin' idea, about a widowed father goin' to see his adult children, but it bothered me that none of them had an honest relationship with him. Thursday was spent at the Alamo Drafthouse. Saw TIBW with my friend Carin. We both agreed that it started out slow, but got better. I thought Steve Buscemi's Antone was pretty funny, and its always cool to see James Gandolfini. Followed that up with Halle Berry in The Call. Yeah, saw it just for Halle Berry. And, ya know, it was actually pretty good, 'til the endin'. Didn't much care for that... And finally, an employee screenin' of Spring Breakers, which I didn't much care for at all. Went over to the Ritz yesterday to see the "Tough Guy Cinema" showin' of The Wild Bunch. That was a good western. William Holden was awesome. Jennifers Body: D+ This Megan Fox and Amanda Seyfried film about a demon possessed hottie(Jennifer) and her nerdy BFF since childhood(Needy) at it's core has a story that could work. The execution of it was just underwhelming. They live in a rural town where everyone seemingly knows each other. An up and coming band comes out to play and local bar. The band, Low Shoulder, wants to strike it big and be the next Maroon 5(yes that's a line in the film). They are going to sacrifice a virgin to a demon god that will grant them the power, fame, glory and ritches they seek. Jennifer comes onto them and after an entrancing music number(which puts the whole place under a spell) the leave with Jennifer to be their sacrifice. Oops, she's not a virgin. If you sacrifice a non-virgin then the demon is allowed to be freed and inhabit the body and essentially feed on souls at will vs waiting for sacrifices. The movie doesn't at all explain how Needy seemingly has super hearing early in the film. It's trying to establish some super BFF link by a flashback to Needy sucking the blood off of Jennifers finger when they were like 5. This connection is what keeps the two linked throughout the film. The acting is just really OTT, even for a demon possession film. It's unintentionally funny imo in places. I think with some tweaking of the script and better talent to handle it this could've been something. However, AS IS, it's pretty lackluster.

Amour (A-) I finally got a chance to see the feel-bad movie of last year, completing with set of Best Picture nominees for 2012. It's a very humane and intelligent look at the depressing final moments in the generally happy life of an old married couple, and probably about as good a movie as could be made on this subject. Virtually a two-person show, and both actors are terrific. 36. Moulin Rouge (B) High-octane nonsense, which has a number of quite brilliant moments, and some lovely music, but it never quite becomes (for me, anyway; a lot of people obviously disagree with this) the transcendant emotional experience it clearly wants to be. First up, Bad Teacher, which showed more of Cameron Diaz's attempts to land a rich husband after her engagement ended. Seems like all the language and jokes were the same as the theatrical cut, just a few added scenes. Followed that up with the director's cut of Salt, one of three versions of the movie on the DVD. Watched the theatrical cut last year. The director's cut seemed to have a couple more flashbacks than I remember and the endin' is a bit different. Just about to finish 30 Minutes or Less on DVD...can't believe Jesse Eisenberg went from an Oscar-nominated role in The Social Network to this.

Evil Dead (2013 remake): B+ Attended a free screening of this with a crowd that seemed largely to be die hards of if not Evil Dead then horror in general. The crowd really seemed to like it either way. I'm no Evil Dead purist but I appreciated the way they largely adhered to the structure and gave us updates of memorable moments. For fear of getting into spoiler mode I'm only going to say that it's not a note-by-note remake. It does it's own thing enough to make it unique but still be Evil Dead. I also think that ones view of what is acceptable types of humor in a horror film will play a role in people grading this. By no means are lines written and delivered with the intent to be funny but situationally they are even while the delivery may not be. It's just a few times but the audience, myself included, found them well timed. It's very gory and got a few jumps. The 50yr old man to my left and the 30yr old woman just down from me both were very easy to get. They got me once or twice also. !!!!!STAY THROUGH THE CREDITS!!!!!!! Not only is there material there but brief 3sec scene at the end. When the credits go all black it's not over.

Went out to see The Croods 3D for free...was hopin' to see the Die Hard at the White House movie, but missed the showtime. Croods was pretty good..nice voice cast, good animation, and it was pretty fun. Followed that up with a second viewin' of The Incredible Burt Wonderstone with my friend Alex, and then ABCs of Death. That was actually not terrible...an anthology movie where 26 directors were each given a letter of the alphabet, had to come up with a word for that letter, and then depict how death relates to that word. I think C, D, M, T & Q were my favorites. Watched the alternate endin' for Chernobyl Diaries on blu ray the other night...not countin' it, though, since it was just a special feature, not part of a rewatch of the movie with the new endin'. And the theatrical endin' was way better. Watched the Marvel one shot 'Item 47' on blu ray the other night, too. Saw the new GI JOE movie last night in 3D. Aside from the ninja fight on the side of the mountain, there's really no need for this movie to have been in 3D. That fight was awesome, though. Saw Admission today...meh. Didn't like it much at all.

The Artist (A-) In 2011 I preferred Hugo to this, but on revisiting them this year, I think this is in fact the better film. It's more consistent, plot-wise, in particular. Dujardin and Bejo are perfect for the roles, and really do come across like 20s film stars. Rewatching also made me recognize Freddy from Mad Men as the cop who Uggy retrieves to save George. For those who have Netflix streaming, there's an independent film called Amber Alert that is a really tense suspense film. Some people filming a day trip start following a car whose license matched an amber alert sign. This is the kind of indie where family members are cast and crew, but it's quite good nonetheless. Andrew Niccol did an amazing job with The Host. The source material is obiously florid melodrama. It's based on a novel by the Twilight girl, Stephenie Meyer. The heroine is a volcano erupting emo but the movie as a whole has an adamatine commitment to its OTT. Niccol manages to make a decent wallet out of a sow's ear. Very impressive in a way. And also vastly more entertaining than Olymbus Has Fallen.

Hard to believe perhaps after the very uneven, divisive and mischaracterized first film. If the first film did anything right it was to actually set up the pieces that allowed this film to feel much more like G.I. Joe. It corrected itself by not having the over the top humor that Wayans Ripcord played. I don't even blame Wayans as he's a funny guy. This movie, that role just wasn't a good fit for the film, he only played the role as he was hired to do so. I blame the script that felt that was necessary. The bad humor was only one thing they corrected. They also made the tech much more of a tiny jump ahead of normal instead of into sci-fi tech territory. The f/x was also much better as to not be distracting as the finale was in the first film. This film does have humor but it's better placed and within better context of character moments. The character of Flint is really bland. The character within the Joe world commands plenty of authority himself and here he was portrayed as essentially a Lieutenant, which any character could interchangeable have been. The smaller cast also makes it feel a bit un-Joe, especially with so much focus on Johnson's Roadblock. Despite Bruce Willis' General Colton only having about 15min or so combined screen time in the last 2/3 of the film he felt more integral than Flint. Adrianne Palicki shines as Lady Jaye. I really think the reason Flint is used was due solely to how these two are linked in the mythos. There is a nice moment with her and Colton at the end of the film that ties up her character arc. Her performance here makes me wish a stronger scripted Wonder Woman show for her had happened. Snake Eyes, Storm Shadow, Cobra Commander are all equally well done. CC is improved upon from the first. I like Ray Stevenson and his Firefly was fun to watch. I'd be much more inclined to support a sequel to this now. I'd like to bring back Baroness and Scarlett. General Hawk should be an easy return as well among others(without being spoilery). Destro seems set up for a third film most likely.
