According to some stories, Jolie turned the role down twice.

Downey could just play the female role too, right? ;)

Portman's previous efforts at acting in front of a green-screen don't particularly inspire confidence, but then, there's a huge difference between the modern George Lucas and Alfonso Cuaron in terms of giving actors direction.

I hope Portman accepts. There really aren't a lot of other female stars with the acting chops to pull of a one woman show like this who are also a big enough draw at the box office to justify the relatively big budget.

If this were a sci-fi space thriller set during the Victorian era, Keira Knightley would so be all over this. :)

I'm skeptical about Portman in such a role as this. Very skeptical.

First, her frailness is not exactly what one pictures for such a character. (an astronaut)

Second, perhaps Cuaron can motivate her better than Lucas could (one would hope so) - but my impression from the prequels was also that she was more of a "reactor" than an "actor". (and by that I mean someone who has a hard time getting into the role without being surrounded by proper sets and other actors in character) But I confess I have not seem all of her work. She clearly can do very well in some parts, but she is not a self-motivated actor. The director has to coax it out of her.

^ A lot of actors came across bad in the prequels, I think mainly because Lucas is a bad director who only cared about the special effects and moving his story forward. The actors were just chess pieces to him.

Based on the script Portman would be perfect for the character.

Sure, why not? He's already played an Australian actor playing a black actor playing a black man in Vietnam. He can pull off merely getting a sex-change this time around no problem I'm betting.

His schedule needs to fit in 'Sherlock Holmes 2" though so he couldn't even if he wanted to lol.

It's movie science and anyone who knows anything about movie science knows that it's about as accurate as most "based on real events" stories. In otherwords, there's a grain of truth to it somewhere but the majority of it is just embellishment and fake.

Okay...if Clooney is aboard this movie is going to be awesome. I'm already excited about this but yeah that'd be an excellent replacement for RDJ.
