Every suicide is shocking, but this is even more so. Tony Scott was a successful director. He must have been very unhappy to do something like this.

I saw "Director Tony Scott commits" in the sidebar and was curious what new project he was attached to. Rather unfortunate, just shows yet again that money and success isn't a guarantee of happiness and to take stock of what we have.

It's sad when I think about the family left behind.

I wonder how this will affect Ridley Scott?. I hope he will be able to recover from this.

No it's no more or less shocking than any other suicide - it's a mistake to inject "was a successful x" or "was very rich" or "had everything" into the conversation because within the context of serious depression it is irrelevant.

Thankfully, most of us have not had to deal with friends or family committing suicide. So when someone we have heard of, someone whose art has touched us in one way or another, kills himself like this, it is more shocking than someone we have never heard of. That does not mean, of course, that it is any more or less tragic.

I feel bad for his two kids. They look pretty young.

I don't know what Tony's private life is like but my family has seen multiple suicides and none were people at the top of their game so to speak so in that sense it's surprising. I'm sure a lot of people believe they'd be happier if they didn't have to worry about things like money and job security and so on.

In many cases having those things do help make people happier but serious chronic depression is a totally different beast. Just ask Jay Gatsby.

Shocking. He made such iconic films. He was the bread and butter of Movies. What drove him to do it...

This is horrible. I haven't been this sad about this kind of news since John Barry passed away.

Damn this sucks. He made some damn entertaining films, with Crimson Tide, Enemy of the State and Unstoppable being the highlights for me. RIP.
